fubar_2_niner Posted June 8 Posted June 8 After reading the latest Korea blog and the implication of heavy raids, I wonder if this new discovery might also be incorporated into GB ! Our high altitude fighters desperately need some targets. Large bomb groups have been pleaded for for ages now. Thoughts everybody. Fubar
Kubert Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I am sure It won't be. Heavy bombers formations in Korea will be possible because of different engine of that game. Unless devs make WWII western front map as new module for Korea from scratch, It won't come. 2

The developers have always known that their decision to use full flight modelling etc for AI aircraft puts more of a strain on CPU usage than the standard practice for air combat sims, which has been to use simplified AI etc allowing more aircraft at the expense of realism. They made a choice, and for IL-2 GB, they stuck to it. Given the extensive work they are already doing for the Korea engine upgrades, they have evidently decided that it is worth looking into this again, for the revised engine. Possibly some minor features from the new engine will get back-ported into IL-2 GB content, but I don't think it's at all realistic to expect major revisions like this to be. It just doesn't make economic sense to allocate limited resources into revising old content, when the same resources can be directed at making the most of the opportunity presented by starting with a clean slate. 4
Goldwrench Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Anyone can make a campaign right now for GB with 500 bombers flying through the air. It just will require a single-core CPU running at 65.8 Ghz and server farm power supply/nuclear power plant in order to run it. The fundamental changes in the engine that they are working for Korea are needed to even think about such things, by not only reducing CPU demand (and making the GPU do more work) but hopefully spreading it out among multiple cores. You will probably see a lot of users go from CPU-limited in GB to GPU-limited in Korea. Given enough years, they can loop back around and re-make GB from scratch with the new techniques (which may or not be already obsolete by then). The good news is that, based on the devlogs, it seems map development is much more streamlined and efficient, so the pace of new additions could theoretically be faster.
357th_KW Posted June 9 Posted June 9 This is roughly the limit of what can be done with Il-2 BoX right now: 18-24 AI bombers with 6-12 AI escorts and interceptors plus any MP participants. I've tested with up to 40 players and the server can do it, but the game starts having rendering issues, where an individual player's game might not be drawing all the aircraft in the immediate vicinity. In a perfect world I'd love to be able to roll with two boxes of 24-36, plus another 100 fighters, but this setup gives a good feel while still running well for most players. Come check it out sometimes - server is running 24/7 and is mixed PvE/PvP so you can play it solo. 1
