F4 Gun Pods and 1942 DB engine in BOM

Having played BOS I realize that the availability of Bf-109 Gun Pods was changed to reflect their true availability in 1942.

Playing BOM in late-1941, with Bf-109 F2 and F4 available, I changed the allocated F2 to an F4 and to my surprise was able to select the Gun Pods and 1942 DB engine. Is this an oversight?

 

I have a question. I'm no WWII fighter buff however I understood that the Luftwaffe flew in an open finger-4 formation (later adopted by the Allies) however in the game the flight is in close Vic or echelon. Can someone explain?

It's a bug with the GUI.

The formation options are unfortunately limited by the current capabilities of the engine.
