About retail and Steam version of BOS

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm considering buying Bos when its released , but I have a couple of questions if any one knows the answers, Will Bos be released on disk [ I have minimal download] and will it also be released As a choice of steam or not steam, like rise of flight.

Posted

I have pretty bad internet as well, but I bit the bullet, and it works great! (what kind of download speeds have you got?)
I don't think it'll be released on disk, but I'm not entirely sure. There will be a steam release soon and the game itself will be released in September.

The devs were not sure of making a hard copy of the game. I would be happy if they did, always prefer the box on the shelf :)

Same for me,I preffer box in shelf to extend my actual collection of all old Il2 releases. But I am afraid that hard copy is kind of extinct nowdays. There are digital downloads everywhere.Premium Edition would go nicely with hardcopy, paper manual and some small treat (some badge or medal I can pin to my car keys :) )

Nice! There was even Messerschmitt logo :)

Rise of Flight originally came in a very nice box with a fold out map and manual which I still have. So did the following "Iron Cross Edition" I was amazed to see it on a store shelf at Fry's Electronics.

I think RoF was actually the last game I bought on DVD

can we get a pilot patch with that box, Jason? you know like the old one I was wearing at the thing (I use that fraise because of the Viking series) a year ago.

Also so you can get a good deal on patches through the studio, they also do challenge coins, Battle Coins.

l just came from Airbus 350 presentation here and guess what, no more paper. All performance, navigation and payload data go direct from flight dispacht staff to airplane computers with no crew action required via wifi connection.

It seems that boxed DVD games are over too. But it would be great to have a complete PDF documentation like a Stalingrad map to print and navigate.

Same here.

I'd like to see BoS do the same thing.

Hi Jason, will the retail version be free of steam, or not

All versions are free of Steam except those that were bought on Steam.

You can't active your key from this site on the steam right now.

Everyone,

If you buy it on Steam you can activate it on Steam. If you buy it from our website it is not compatible with Steam. Same as with ROF.

If you bought from our website already, I do not think you can switch to Steam. Again, same as ROF unless something has been changed that I am unaware of.

I have bought as many games as I can in boxes :) Sure some are straight from Steam, but can say that at least 90% of my games are boxed versions.

I'm so disappointed to hear this news. I was bought it at the first time pre-purchase, to support IL2BOS development.

Why do this to your loyal fans.

The last boxed game I purchased was the original Rise of Flight release in 2009.

I have not missed one single bit of boxed games. The physical media becomes outdated within a few months as updates have to be downloaded to bring the physical media release to a playable state. Within one year, it is easier to download the latest packaged version to install than to install from the physical media and then update. Little is printed in manuals anymore, it is in PDF format readily available and can be opened on any of today's new technologies from smartphones to iPads to tablets. The cardboard waste the boxed games generate isn't missed either, that can be used for things like cat traps or insulation.

The physical media becomes so outdated so quick that it makes little sense to continue forward with it - games on physical media for installation are becoming the 5 1/2" (or even the 3 1/4") disk of the CD era. The physical media's version will eventually cost you more to update in terms of downloading, if you pay for data transfer, than it would be to download the most up-to-date installation executable.

I fail to see why Steam integration for non-steam games is a disappointment.

I have Steam, I have a few games through Steam - I don't miss Steam when it isn't running, and I actively seek out ways to circumvent Steam for the games I have purchased through Steam. Great purchasing platform, thats all.

And where the hell is Half-Life 2 Ep3 or Half-Life 3? Steam isn't helping me out with that one at all.

This what Steam does to all of us, we can't tell Valve what to do.

You'll have fast updates with seeding, also Steam is behind on patches in many situations. I've had non-Steam titles updated before Steam titles because the patch was cleared from the dev for the non-steam games while a friend who had a Steam version had to wait for Steam to clear the patch.

Steam achievements only exist if achievements are there, also pointless as they do nothing. "300 planes shot down achievement!" Yay? Like the Steam trading cards, so silly. They do nothing, absolutely nothing.

I play ArmaIII with my friends, I know they are playing it before I even launch Steam because they are VOX and I talk to them. Never seen the point of that "need."

I'm a bit of a Steam neophyte.

If I don't have a Steam version will I still be playing against those players?

In the same servers as I can access through the BOS interface/non-Steam?

Just curious

A lot of games when them release on steam, can be activated the old key.

Such as the European truck simulation 2, DCS World series.

So I think this is not a tech issue.

I do not see any loss to you, if you do that.

Absolutely - Steam doesn't divide or unite the playing community, it is simply a purchasing method. It is awesome for buying games digitally as it is very fast to download the released title initially but it doesn't segregate Steam/non-Steam games.

ArmAII and ArmAIII, for example, both can be purchased and run through Steam and play on servers that don't have Steam downloaded software. Additionally, ArmaII (I haven't done it with ArmAIII yet) can be set to launch externally and separate from Steam so Steam never has to be run again.

It's an awesome purchasing platform for titles that don't have their own digital distro means, but beyond that it doesn't add much advantage over games that have built-in patch distro methods and any titles that have their own digital distro methods I always go with their setup than through Steam, or even worse - Origin <shudder>.

yes just like ROF you will be able to see the same server list. I just pulled the trigger.

Steam put a stop to that with DCS you can no longer use the key from ED DCS purchases, you have to get it from steam. Steam states they can not afford to loose revenue and take up their time to make the keys compatible.

K,

Soooooooooooo, it's good for showing the game, getting more exposure and letting a different subset of players buy it easilly.

Bbbuuuuuttttttttttt, it doesn't negatively impact the game I bought in regards to those newly exposed Steam players or confronting them in the servers I will have available to me.

AAAAaaaannnnddddd, now I don't care if BOS can be added to the Steam account I haven't looked at since I bought/played Battlefield two years ago.

It's an awesome purchasing platform, but beyond that it is becoming more and more useful to those who want to spam users and I've seen it being used as a malware vector via the aforementioned spam and aggergating Steam user's emails to spam.

Then let's talk about Arma2.

Now all Arma2 Key can be activated in the steam.

Whether it is retail version or digital version from offical website or amazon.

Steam is just another trading platform, where you can buy BoS.

If you bought a Steam version, you must register the key on our site in any way.

The game runs on our servers and is protected by our system, not Steam.
