QuaxDihedral Posted May 27 Posted May 27 Hi All! I'm a newbie here and I have a question! I got into a spin in my Fokker E3 while trying to get away from some N11s that were trying to kill me, but after shaking off the French I found I was unable to recover from the spin! I did the usual procedure: throttle back, stick forward, applied full rudder opposite the spin direction. I spun all the way to the ground and died anyway! Am I missing something? Is there a trick to recovery in the E3? Or are rotaries in general just death traps? Thnx for reading!

czech693 Posted May 27 Posted May 27 The rotary engined aircraft have some different spin recovery methods compared to the inline/v-8 engines. For example, the Camel left recovery is opposite rudder, stick back and into the spin. It's opposite rudder, stick forward and into the spin for a right recovery. That's because the spinning rotary engine torque plays into the recovery. In a left turn the nose trys to climb and in a right turn the nose trys to dive. 2

Been testing out the Rotaries in service in 1916: DH2 has normal recovery with the usual recovery method N11 was difficult to get into a spin at all! Recovered from stalls much like a c172! Actually the N11 is a really nice plane! Clearly superior to all its contemporaries. Now that I'm dead I might reincarnate as a N11 pilot!
