1CGS LukeFF Posted May 16 1CGS Posted May 16 Greetings, comrades! Today, we will talk about something that images can't show: sound. We are showcasing these new sounds in all their glory. All the details can be read (and heard!) here. Headphones recommended! https://il2-korea.com/news/dd_32 10
No105_Swoose Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Wow! I've watched and listened to P-51 Mustangs and F-80s/T-33s at air shows and other events. The new IL-2 Series: Korea sounds are the closest thing to real engine sounds that I have ever heard in a flight simulation. Bravo!
Rjel Posted May 16 Posted May 16 I was a little underwhelmed by the P-51. It didn’t sound very throaty. Maybe it was because this video was titled as engine sounds but I didn’t notice the familiar whistle as the Mustang did its flyby.
Trooper117 Posted May 16 Posted May 16 I think the improvement of these sounds compared to the GB series is a big step forward... I look forward to more of this.

Isn't it possible to get recordings from a real Mustang and then use that sound in the game? 1 1
MajorMagee Posted May 16 Posted May 16 I think I can hear a hint of doppler shift in the flyovers, but it's pretty subtle. Is this calculated based on the real physics or is it just hollywood approximations?

Try finding an audio recording of the aircraft and looping it in the background while you play Great Battles and you'll see the result. You would end up with a sound clip that doesn't loop, which sounds the same at all throttle levels, and from all directions...

Not to mention, you would need access to all aircraft and have owners willing to run them at military power

It’s the air crossing over the gun ports and it only happens if the aircraft is at high AoA. 8
Phil_Ciborowski Posted May 17 Posted May 17 The startup and fly-by of that P80 is slick! I cant wait!

I was thinking like using a recording as a baseline and then adjust that to different situations. I actually find it amazing if this is the best that can be done in 2025 when they can use AI to clone the voice of a person and nobody can hear if it's fake or true. I'm only talking about the sound of the Mustang now, since I never heard a P-80 irl. 7 hours ago, R33GZ said: Sound is relative to the observer, there are waaaaaaaaay to many variables to do that. It would obviously not be possible to get recordings from all aircrafts in the game, but the most common ones should be doable. With that said, maybe I am too picky about the sound but I have always felt that most of the aircrafts in il-2 sounds like lawnmowers. In my opinion it's a really big difference in the engine sounds to the "other" flight sim.

In my opinion it's a really big difference in the engine sounds to the "other" flight sim. We have a very capable team of engineers who know their way around FMOD and some of whom are real pilots, so they know how audio "works" in flight. If you're basing your opinions only on what you have seen at an airshow, then you're going to have a flawed perception of what the audio should sound like, since the sound of an aircraft engine at that low of an altitude is going to be reflecting off the ground and anything else in the way. It's for the same reason why FPS developers try to source weapon sounds from open-air firing ranges, since an indoor range is going to cause all sorts of problems with sounds echoing off walls, etc. 6 6

Lord_Cool Posted May 18 Posted May 18 (edited) This has to be the most detailed treatment of gas turbines I've seen in any sim. The sound and loudness of the Allison J33 seem spot on for an engine of that size and power. I would be interested to hear some of the other jets on start up and maximum power to tell if they sound subtly different, as opposed them all being given the same generic 'whoosh' and 'whir' sound like some other sims have done in the past. I should think the GE J47 and Klimov VK-1 would be slightly louder than a J33 at maximum power for example since those engines have a slightly higher specific thrust/exhaust velocity and move a little bit more air.
