Present system is Quest 3 plus the following.

MSI 570 Carbon wifi

ryzen 9 5900x

Gigabyte 3090 gaming o/c

32 gig 3200mhz ram

Option 1

MSI Tomahawk B850

ryzen 98003D

48gig 6000mhz ddr 5

Keep 3090

option 2

part ex 5900x for 5800x3d

48 or 64 gig fastest ram for the mb

part ex 3090 for used 4090

The cost is about the same for both, not too bothered about future proofing  as I retired some time ago :)

It's better not to ask the same question on two different forums.

Edit, for the best advice the DCS forum is a much better place, more members with the real knowledge here. So that’s indeed a good action.

Definetely option 1.

If your VR headset is Quest3, then a 3090 is a GPU which can give you everything needed, you could go even at 200% supersampling and still will do a good job.

Then going to the 9800X3D will give you more room for the CPU time frames in dense scenarios.

Also, I don´t know the RAM requirements of DCS, but in IL-2 VR you would not need more than 10 GB of RAM.

I have not tested lately but four years ago I was analyzing this:

I honestly don't feel there is much value in upgrading your current setup. The only way you would see substantial gains (~35-50%+) is with the 9800x3d and 4090 combined IMO.

I was going to go with option 2, but from what I have read I think 1 will be better and maybe in the future go for a 5080 or 4090. Thanks for your help.

Do remember I had to put extra 2x8Gb RAM for running DCS 5y ago as it needed 32Gb RAM, but now I noticed when flying the Mosquito in DCS, it even goes higher then 32Gb. This old DirectX11 DCS game must have an serious memory leakage.
Maybe get an 4 Ramslot motherboard and start with an 2x32Gb Ram to avoid the use of the much slower virtual memory. If needed more you can always expand with another 2x32Gb RAM sticks.
As talking about the motherboard get the one with a decent high power regulation and the last PCIe5, checkout youtube HardwareUnboxed, Der8auer & GamersNexus reviews so your ready for the future upgrade.

The MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK is a pretty good motherboard.

I am spending some time on the overclockers forum and apparently there are issues with the bios, so I am thinking of going for a MSI MPG B850 EDGE TI WIFI  it gives me 4 m2 slots which will be handy

It’s in Dutch, not German btw, but you can use the translator in your web browser.

I think going straight for a 5090 or 4090 isn't a bad idea. The processor is crucial at 1080p resolutions, but not in VR. As the resolution increases, the difference in frame rates between a 3D and non-3D Ryzen decreases dramatically. The 5900x runs the 4090 perfectly, and I assume the 5090 does too. With your rig, I'd only change the graphics card; the performance difference between a 3090 and a 4090 is 80%, and for a 5090, it's 100%.
