Request For Mod To Convert The Albatros D.III OAW To An Albatros D.III For Flying Circus

Now that the official skin template is available for the Albatros D.III OAW in Flying Circus, is it possible for any of you modders and skin artists to provide a texture mod that recreates the appearance of an original production D.III (like was offered in Rise of Flight)? This pretty much consisted of deleting the step from the port side of the nose and making a representation on the original smaller rudder (with less radius and surface area). The Rise of Flight mod also included a model file that was placed in the "Plane" folder. Not sure if conversion of the original files would work with the difference in resolution. Anyway my apologies if this request should have been made under the Skins and Template header. Cheers!

Hi wackywings, I just bought Flying Circus modules.

I'll try to revive my old Johannisthal mod from RoF to FC.

I have to familiarize to the new templates and stuff first.

I haven't played nor mod for over ten years now...meaning I'm a bit rusty.

Also being in a totally different place regarding personal life, with much limited spare time, it's going to take a while...

  Hi Elephant!

Thank you for responding to my post! Firstly, let me compliment you on the beautiful job you did on the mod for Rise of Flight. It was certainly spot on!

I have tried to adapt your original textures to work in Flying Circus with limited results. The biggest obstacle I have noticed is that the new model superimposes seudo 3-D texture markers for the cowling louvers and round access covers on the nose that do not allow for their repositioning for accurate representation (unless the model file can be modified?). Also there is a gap (which shows black as well) where the upper cowling metal meets with the wood of the nose. Also, you can remove all of the layers of the cowling step but there is still a ghost-like artifact that still marks its position in the texures. Please see my attached pics.

The new template seems a bit disorganized and a lot of key layers have their labels in Russian. Once we get it all scoped out, we can adapt for the Johannisthal model except the placement of the louvers and round access covers. The template allows for the removal of the square cockpit footstep, so your half-round one can be utilized in its place (though I would like to see it slightly larger than before). The new model also includes the turnbuckles for the rigging, so the proper layer in the template needs to be included or they show up black. Also you can use your original wheel textures with the square stem access.

Checking my sources, it looks as though Johannisthal starting utilizing the nose step and squared pilot step in their mid to late production runs before handing things over to OAW. Just the early production run of D.III's need the cosmetic changes on the nose (but you already knew that).

Anyway Elephant, I am grateful for your interest in the project and would be glad to assist you in anyway I can. I apologize for the quality of your original skin textures in the Flying Circus viewer shots. I didn't have time to adjust the brightness level or correct the alpha layer refelectiveness. Take care and have a great day!

Elephant,

I just found and re-read all of the posts on SimHQ.net of all the effort you, Graf, and others put into the research and modifications for this in 2011. Thank you again for all of your hard work. I still have all of the modded default files and well as a full set of the Jasta 11 skins that you put together.😁

Thank you!

The problem you mentioned with the phantom footstep and the different planking of the nose as well, is treated, in the RoF mod, via the normal map.

I also had made, back in the day, a faked D5 mod (never released).

I don't know if all these things work (looking acceptable) in the greater scale of FC.

I'll try to explore things during the weekend.

Guys, could you please help me with unGTP; it seems not working any more as I remember it (I got the IL-2 version).

I drug and drop gtp files but nothing happens. I press enter and the program closes...I don't remember exactly what I was doing back then.

I need to edit the normal maps of the planes ie Albatros D3-D5. In RoF they were located in the Planes folder (after extraction).

In RoF I remember extracting the graphics.gtp files, but in the new generation there are lots of gtp files Planes, Skins...

I'm a bit lost, I can't even use the extractor, I could use a little help....
