Hi all

Out of interest I just noticed that the MG17 in the Bf109 F4 has large explosions (and explosion sound plays) when strafing and the rounds hit the ground. Other similar calibre mgs don't have this effect. It shows as AP ammunition in the plane configuration. Is this a mistake or am I missing something?

Could it be you are confusing them with the 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub?

No I’m definitely firing the MGs not the cannon. The effect of rounds hitting the ground is the same as the cannon though.

So, you`ve unlocked cheat mode then.

As it should be. Everything about the 109 is simply better than the rest.

Hearing the sound of rounds hitting the ground from within your cockpit is Hollywood.  These engines don't have mufflers and put out a loud exhaust sound.  On top of that you're wearing a headset with earphones so you can hear the radio calls over the sound of the engine exhaust. Add to that the sound of the slipstream.  lf you're on the ground you will probably hear the cannon rounds impacting but not from within the cockpit.

Are you by some chance running some mods?

Unfortunately I'm not getting that effect...

I'm running a completely vanilla installation of IL2. No mods at all.

Do you get the audio effect of the MG rounds explosion hitting the ground same as cannons (you have to be close to ground to hear)?

Other similar calibre MGs that I've tried dont have the audio effect.

Well....

I played again earlier and couldn't recreate the same effect with either the Bf109 F4 or F2. So either I managed to create an unusual set of circumstances that resulted in that effect, or, sadly more likely, I completely imagined the whole thing (it must be an age related thing) 😳

Sorry for wasting everyones time.

BTW Jaeger - As a completely new player to IL2 (and flight sims really), I look forward to playing your campaigns. Just finished Ten days of Autumn by Blacksix and thought it was great first campaign for new player.

I hope you enjoy flying some of my missions! You might want to try out Wild Mustangs since you have Battle of Bodenplatte. That one starts out kind of mellow and gets a little more difficult towards the end as you become an element and then flight leader in the Mustand D model. The mustang is an all around great plane.

I'm not sure how you have your weapons controls mapped, but it could have been that you fired the cannons without knowing it at the time.

Thanks for the recommendation.

No idea what happened with the MGs. It’s had me questioning my sanity 😂
