IckyATLAS Posted April 7 Posted April 7 I built a new rig as I usually do every 2 to 3 years or so. In fact I jump one generation of CPU with next GPU. The RTX 4090 was worth doing the jump as the difference with the RTX 3090 vas very important. I had in full 4K 120 frames. I do not need more, as I do not do VR. But this time my new rig has inherited my faithful RTX4090 that was an Asus ROG Strix OC edition. Frankly the RTX5090 is no similar leap. A meager 15% max. The rest with additional frames DLSS is pure bullshit at least for me. It all seems to me artificial and no idea if this really would work with GB IL2. As long as I know you need the game to be designed for it and IL2 is not. And the 5090 I could order same was 3'300 US$. I refuse to pay this even if I am a somewhat of tech freak and have the money for it. There is a limit as this is for personal and not professional use. There is also the power which reaches ridiculous levels. I think Nvidia is hitting a kind of technological wall at least for us, I mean the general public. We enter the realm of diminishing return. The chips become power freaks, have enormous sizes, cost a fortune, cooling becomes a tech challenge, and all that for a small 15% true improvement. Yes I agree that 15% is not ridiculous (4090 was a 40% jump), but when you consider all that was made to reach that I am wondering if there is a future. Either the RTX6090 if it comes must be a technological revolution, I mean at least: 30% better than 5090 (no DLSS) 32 or 48 GB memory max 500 Watts, real market price under 2000 dollars, size two slots. Then I will reconsider again a new GPU. 2
Aapje Posted April 7 Posted April 7 The 5090 is a horrible buy right now, if you have a 4090, not just due to the pricing and availability, but also because the new drivers are a horrendous mess with no end in sight. Lots of people who had a 40-series card and upgraded, went back to their old cards, since those actually work.
ST_Catchov Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Phew that was close. Thanks for the tip. I was about to sell my house. 3
cardboard_killer Posted April 7 Posted April 7 I thought about selling blood and semen but decided on a car wash instead. 1
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted April 8 Posted April 8 They pay you for semen? They keep calling the cops on me when I get too excited during the blood drawing. 3
IckyATLAS Posted April 9 Author Posted April 9 (edited) I must admit that all these horror 5090 stories does not do much good for the brand. I wonder what new tech will bring us a new dream card: Performance of a 5090 size chip, with GPU and memory clock frequencies at 6GHz Power consumption 200 watts max One slot card Price 500 US$ Will dream for a long time. Aapje Posted April 9 Posted April 9 200 watt simply cannot be reasonably cooled with a one slot card, so that demand is very unreasonable, unless you are going for water cooling. There is a 4060 Ti one slot card with a blower design that is very loud, but it never got sold in the West.
