Jarboe Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I'm looking to dive into the P47 as my next aircraft, but just had a question about the turbo. I've seen some people recommend just linking the throttle and turbo, while others suggest just setting the turbo to 100% and only worry about bringing it down when at pretty high alt. Anyone have any suggestions on what the best use for the turbo is currently? Thanks!
SCG_Tzigy Posted March 30 Posted March 30 See official manual.... However..... i just link and leave alone 99% of the time both il2 and DCS If you do a deep search u will find tons of detailed discussions, and i promise your head will be spinning faster then your jug's turbo....

Only time you will need to reduce turbo RPM is at extreme altitude, which very rarely happens in this game
FeuerFliegen Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Linking works for most people until high altitude, but I'm picky about maximizing every little bit of performance, so I usually fly with full throttle and I regulate manifold pressure by modulating the turbo, which starts producing boost around 86% open. The engine has it's own single stage supercharger (in addition to the exhaust driven turbo), so at near sea level altitude, you can get as high as 52" manifold pressure without using the turbo. This is why I like to keep the throttle usually at max, as once you climb, you'll need all of it anyway, and I figure it's best to utilize all of that supercharger's power instead of having throttling losses from doing less than 100%
Skycat1969 Posted March 31 Posted March 31 The rules in the historic training manual don't fully apply to the simulation. In real life you'd worry about turbo overspeed, turbo collapse, engine detonation, and other dangers of mishandling or abusing the aircraft's systems. In the game the engine is practically 'bullet proof' (not literally). Link the turbo or set it to 100% for maximum power at low and mid altitudes. If you want to learn to fly the P-47 as historically accurate as possible, the DCS version is probably as detailed as you can get on a PC. I try to fly the IL-2 Great Battles versions 'by the book' but they are more survey than study sim. I do love them in VR though. 😀 1
Ace_Pilto Posted April 3 Posted April 3 All I can think of when I see P-47 threads is "Greetings this is Greg" You just read that in his voice. Here's his channel page with the P-47 videos filtered for the uneducated. I consider him to be one of the best resources available. 2 1
