JG1_Greif Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I saw this video on YT today where the guys from YAW3 (3DOF motion rig) showed that they made a separate profile in their software for IL-2 and it looks quite compelling. Not the most thrilling dogfight but I have to admit I'd love to see what it's like to fly IL-2 on this setup. 1
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted March 29 Posted March 29 There should be a warning on vids like this that "unless you're a millionaire, you don't want to know this stuff exists". 1
ST_Catchov Posted March 30 Posted March 30 When I tried one out in a shop, I didn't like how the VR headset mussed up my hair. It ruined my erudite countenance. No sale. Have you noticed, like in this clip, the dudes clamping those things to their scalp are always bald. If I had my way, I'd include a scalp massaging element so as to inhibit the baldness factor. Although it may be too late for some of you. 2
Zooropa_Fly Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I only saw the first couple of minutes.. when does he barrel roll ? Dude needs to learn to shoot. Yep, too late for me Catchy.. too late. 2

BlitzPig_EL Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Me too. I once tried a prototype commercial racing "full motion" platform, but with a screen, not VR. I found it very unnatural, compared to my real on track experience. I'm sure someone with zero real track experience would find it fun(it's intended audience), but I just thought it's motions were exaggerated and distracting. Much like Hollywood SFX. As to the posted video, it was painful to watch. The guy shooting from too far away, and his lack of aerobatic skills. Obviously was too much Ace Combat console experience.

The issue with that setup is that you can't actually mimic real movement with a motion platform, and your eyes are going to tell you that, so the motion is unconvincing. With VR, your eyes are telling you that the motion is there, and then you can use the motion platform to have your body also tell you that something akin to that motion is happening, even though the motion platform is not actually moving in the same way a real car/plane would. But the most important with that kind of setup is to have low latency, so the motion matches up with what you see, rather than have these big movements. So I don't think that the Yaw is the right way to do it, although these big movements obviously are great marketing.
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I guess it's best to stick with the poor man's motion simulator. 2

In Vr mode your brain strongly convince yourself that your body is really moving , so every single motion your body makes on a motion platform is finally "multiplied" by your brain.
Charlo-VR Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) I met the guy in the video, Zsolt, back in Sept. 2021 in San Diego at the Flight Sim Expo. He’s a really nice guy dedicated to meeting the Kickstarter’s commitments. Still waiting on my Yaw 3, I’m Kickstarter backer 619 so probably waiting a few more years at their current pace of production. 😑 But at least I may eventually receive a significantly improved product from what I pledged for back in 2021. And I fully plan to limit its motion and yaw. My gaming space isn’t big enough for anything larger than the Yaw 3, and my Next Level Racing Motion Platform V3 has been great for me these last four years. That’s how I know a little motion is all that is necessary to trick my brain in VR, and I quickly get queasy without the motion platform moving. Even the experience of a parachute opening in IL-2 GB is very well simulated on my Motion Platform V3 😀 Edited March 30 by Charlo-VR
[CPT]Crunch Posted March 31 Posted March 31 I don't know about that 360 degree YAW axis, I could see myself getting into an unrecoverable flat spin with a Pimax cord around my neck. 2

I think you can limit any axis to a certain maximum in the software, so any Pimax induced auto asphyxiation should be strictly on a voluntary basis. I'm not judging of course, you do you 😉 5
