[CPT]Crunch Posted March 15 Posted March 15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLy04my7-Fk Nice deep dive into the Shooting Star, the 180 gallon tip tanks were unsafe and never really approved for use. If one failed to feed the pilot had to open the canopy and shoot holes in it to drain the tank, or an imbalance that exceeded trim capability would result. 98,550 combat sorties, that's a bunch. First combat engaged with IL-10's downing four out of seven. It was downgraded in Europe to an attacker role shortly after the war with the Air Force going back to a prop for it's primary fighter, and no it wasn't the Mustang, the Thunderbolt. 1
