Nice deep dive into the Shooting Star, the 180 gallon tip tanks were unsafe and never really approved for use.  If one failed to feed the pilot had to open the canopy and shoot holes in it to drain the tank, or an imbalance that exceeded trim capability would result.

First combat engaged with IL-10's downing four out of seven.
