Hi all,

I'm curious about the instruments I can add to the Nieuport 28.

Please see the attached screenshot, but how do I read the airspeed indicator? I assume the instruments from right to left are airspeed, engine tachometer, and altimeter.

The tach is pretty easy to read and the altimeter is in 100s of meters.

But what is up with the airspeed indicator? It has two rings: Vitesses (speeds) (times?) 2000 and 4000. How does that translate to KPH or MPH?

In the screenshot, I'm at 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) and the inner ring indicates about 130 (presumably) kph, which is ~81 mph — which not far off from the HUD speed of 73 mph.

Anyway, what is the outer ring supposed to show?

Thanks!

It appears to be an ordinary pitot-type airspeed indicator, marked to give (an approximation of) true airspeed at 2000 m (inner numbers) and 4000 m (outer numbers). As for why it's marked like that, it's hard to say. I'd have thought that by the time the N 28 came into service, they would have figured out the maths to enable pilots to estimate a good enough approximation of TAS with more conventional markings.

The N28 was only deployed by the US Army Air Corp. That at first was equipped with the left overs of  the French. :( And we made very good use of the old stuff they were kind enough to supply. :fly:
