There are a few interesting things to note in this interesting photo of a rugged man from the Korean War. It was taken in winter - you can see some snow on his clothes. The technician is shouldering 20 mm M3 gun belts and you can even identify the round types:

  • AP-T M95s with black projectiles.
  • Incendiary grey-blue M96, in black and white they look almost monochromatic.
  • Red-yellow HE-I M97, here you can see their shiny brass projectiles.

In the background you can see a Skyraider, so this is the deck of an aircraft carrier. We're not hinting at anything yet, though...

I would love to see the AD4 Skyraider as a player flyable plane someday down the road in IL-2 Series: Korea.  The Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach where I volunteer as a docent has a flyable Korean War veteran AD4 in its collection.

Not promising carriers, not promising Skyraiders, and now not promising snow eh?

Skyraider is definitely at, or at least very close to the top of my desires for Korea.

When Korea was a rumor, I wasn't that excited, but after the announcement and some personal research, I am soooo looking forward to it.  It's the perfect time period to be able to enjoy the pinnacle of propeller aviation, as well as jets that still rely on completely manual controls.

Also, I take it from this thread that we'll be getting multiple unique ammunition types, all uniquely modeled?  Which is just what we need; especially considering how badly the US .50 caliber needs proper API-T rounds in BoX; all of the stories I read about how devastating the P-47's eight machine guns were,  but it just doesn't feel that way in the sim.

BTW, can anyone tell me if the P-51 (D-30 right?) or Corsair in Korea uses M3 .50 cal guns, versus the M2?  That would make a massive difference- 50% higher rate of fire, so as mic firepower as if a WW2 P51 had 9x M2 .50 caliber MGs

I've had the same experience. I'm usually not that in to anything after 1942... but if I start reading - I'm now very eager.

Yes, multiple different types of incendiary rounds (with different types of effects) will be included in Korea.

The P-51 (D-25 I think?) has M2 0.50 cal guns. The Jets have M3. The developers have found evidence that a lot of the F-51's deployed to Korea still carried the older guns with the lower rate of fire. If anyone can find conclusive evidence of an F-51 deployed to Korea with the M3 guns - the developers would like to know!

P.S. Wing mounted guns are much more sensitive to convergence issues  and this is a major reason why the P-51 and P-47 feel like they have less firepower compared to German/Russian designs which concentrated guns around the centreline (that and the fact that they are smaller calibre guns obviously). Something we don't know is whether the complex convergence patterns of F-51's will be modelled in Korea... in reality the guns all didn't converge on the same point, and this would help reduce the issues with wing mounted guns.
