What precisely is the penalty for firing on friendlies?

A few times playing in the career mode, I will be trying to shoot down an enemy and either one of my squadron planes flies in the path, or the attacking enemy gets in line with friendly ground forces and my rounds hit them.  I get a cryptic message saying I have suffered a "penalty" for "firing on friendlies."  The issue is never raised again in the game and so one doesn't know what the penalty really was.

 

So, does anyone know?

I heard that the server traces your personal identity using the company's records of your payment data, then assigns demerits to your police record.

Of course that's just hearsay so perhaps best totally discredited.

It probably just weakens your airframe.

Generally they're not very friendly toward you any more after you shoot at them, so you no longer need to regard them as friendlies.

First time I flew online I shot down a team member in a fighter 

 

Makes you appreciate what pilots went through when deciding whether a target was friend or foe.

 

Bombers easier to distinguish
