Enjoying FC 1. Do I need to buy each volume in order?

I've been flying FC campaigns offline and am thinking about trying multiplayer someday.  Do I need to purchase each volume in order?

No

The online servers offer a variety of aircraft.   However,  if you want to be 100% certain that you have access to all the aircraft options that "could" be in use at any one of the online servers, at all times,  you would need all the volumes in order to guarantee that.

In RoF they introduced plane s in reverse order, which made sense.  FC, unfortunately, is not as neatly organized.  Each module may or may not contain planes for a certain period.  For instance, FC1 has the Albatros D.Va, FC3 has the Albatros D.II while the D.III is in FC4.  I would advise looking at the planes in each module and making a decision based on what each contains.

As FC is probably done with now, it might make sense to offer individual aircraft for sale, for instance, if someone wants the Albatros family, or a Sopwith they would like, they just buy the aircraft they desire... a bit like the RoF store, and it might keep the revenue trickling in.
