I'm setting up a new VR rig for my father, I have purchased all of the IL2 content directly through the IL2 website, and I'm trying to start it in VR mode (outside of steam) but it only starts in desktop mode, I read somewhere that it required steam VR to function properly.  Unfortunately I can not link the website purchased keys to the new steam account that I created for him!  And I read somewhere that, that's not even possible.

Furthermore, he is trying to run my old HP reverb G2 on windows 10 with the latest steam and I know that some of those products are no longer supported.  Can anybody help me out?  Is anyone still using a Reverb G2?

Thanks in advance I really appreciate any help!

That's correct. To play on Steam, you need to have Battle of Stalingrad bought from the Steam store. If you have that module, you can then link your accounts and anything you bought on the website will show up in your Steam game. But you'll need a Steam-bought BoS to start with.

I *think* it is possible to run IL2 in VR without Steam, but as I'm a Steam user myself I don't quite know the procedure. I do know for a fact that it's possible to use OpenXR instead of SteamVR, so I guess that's a good starting point.

You need to enable VR mode from the launcher settings. The non-Steam version will then use Steam VR. That doesn't require buying the game from Steam. Steam VR provides a generic API that any installed game can use, regardless of whether the game was bought on Steam.

Once you have it running that way, you can also try to run it with the OpenComposite launcher, which should perform better. But I would start with just getting it working with Steam VR.

Plenty of people are still using the Reverb G2 according to the latest poll. Perhaps one of them will want to help you, or you can just look at a Steam VR tutorial for the Reverb.

The Reverb is end of life and support has been removed from the latest Windows 11 version. However, it should just work in Windows 10. Do keep in mind that Windows 10 goes end of life at the end of the year and then you will no longer get security updates.

The key was that the "Windows Mixed Reality" plugin had to be installed into Steam, not just Steam VR.
Once that was setup the check box in the load menu worked.

Thanks for the reply!
