With "Career" mode?

Goofy how?

I haven't played careers in quite a while. Went on a mission and there were no bombers to escort on an escort mission. Fighters called out all over, could not locate any enemy fighters. Suddenly all friendly escorts vanished, it really reminded me of being in a "Twilight Zone" episode.

 

Restarted the game, started a new career and stayed in eyesight if an AI. Found some bombers, I figured fine things are working. Passed through some clouds, and the sky was empty again. I remember when I played in the past, the bombers flew over the airfield before one took off. That seems to not be true at this time.

I am flying in career and I noticed just a couple of days ago on one escort mission that a flight of enemy a/c vanished, much to my relief.  But so far it has only happened once and not since after about ten more missions.
