Hi guys. Happy New year to everybody! ☺️

I have a question.

Just started to use VR in IL-2.

Everything is a little blurry and planes are all jagged.

I have 5800X, 32GB, MSI 3080.

SteamVR is installed but is overriden with OpenXR and OpenComposite. For now - the connection is established over VD and WiFi (planning to make ethernet connection).

Resolution in OpenXR is set to 3172x3172 and I'm still tinkering and fidling with settings.

One of the problem which make me go nuts is loading screen.

During loading, I'm in the hangar and I can looking around. But the actual loading screen (the vlask one with the progres loadin bar) is somewhere down... Below me! Like I'm floating some 3m above the ground floor and I must looking down to check the ENTER options when is shown.

Any ideas why this is happening?

I think you need to recentre the view - Keypad 5 by default.

Same happened to me when I was goofing around with my lads Quest 3.

Pico 4 user with 3080/32GB/5800X3D here. There is no benefit (that I know of) to using OpenXR with this headset, as it is native SteamVR. So you don't gain any FPS.

I use Virtual Desktop on Godlike resolution with my setup which gets me 40-50FPS. Enough for me. Not enough for some people. It's pretty sharp though, so I'll take the compromise in FPS.

I think you can use the Pico streaming app but maybe it doesn't go to Godlike resolution. Not sure, as it has been updated since I last used it.

I turned off sharpening within IL-2 because it gave me jagged edges. MSAA = 4. All other settings default High.

I can recommend getting fpsVR. That gives you a nice overlay (which you can make transparent) telling you lots of things like GPU/CPU frametime, VRAM usage etc.

Does SteamVR have to be used in conjunction with Virtual Desktop? I had the Pico4 (just gave it to a friend) but I can't remember. I know VD was superior to Pico Streaming.

Stupid question actually, he'll be using it solely for DCS.

Virtual desktop uses SteamVR by default but can also use VDXR which is its own implementation of OpenXR and allows you to bypass SteamVR. Doesn't help with Pico though, unless you want to use OpenXR/Open Composite stuff, which I don't see any reason to. It used to be useful in order to use foveated rendering, but that doesn't work in IL-2 anyway I don't think (and if it did, you could use vrperftoolkit via SteamVR).

Thank you all for the answers.

The guys from my squadron mostly have Pico 4 (not Ultra), so I listened to them about VD app.

I used Pico Connect first with USB C cable, but that only worked with SteamVR. And I really wanted to use XRnecksafer so I can turn my head a little more. For that, I needed OpenXT toolkit and OpenComposite to work.

OpenXR have a nice option to make world size bigger or smaller in the IL-2, fsr, csa rendering... So I wanted to try with those options.

I'm on 3120x3120 resolution and most of the setrings in game are medium. Without MSAA I have some 72 fps mostly.

All that on crappy mesh wifi which I already been in my house.

I'm planning to connect the Pico with ethernet cable so the vonnection would be more stable.

I don't know what the vrperftoolkit is!?

So, you telling me that there is no real benefit for using openxr with Pico 4 over SteamVR?

VD has better synergy with SteamVR than the Meta Link Software, meaning there is no noticeable performance gain over SteamVR with OpenComposite if one uses VD rather than Meta Link. I wouldn‘t know whether the same holds true regarding Pico's Link software.

However, I personally recommend the usage of OC regardless of any performance benefits, as something within that OpenVR to OpenXR translation massively improves clarity at longer distances.
I don‘t know whether that is due to the differences between OpenVR and OpenXR draw calls, or whether it’s a SteamVR thing, but the image noticeably suffers from a lack of clarity when using SteamVR.

I connect my pico 4 to virtual desktop with a USB C cable via the app below. works very well using openxr and steamvr, just use the rust version so you dont have to install java.

But we can't charge the headset then - right?

My pico4 is connected now to VD with the app and the charging icon is on. I havent really used the pico 4 much for PCVR since I have the crystal. But testing it briefly, it seems to work well with this app...

Yes, seems to be charging in IL2. I havent removed the app yet but I dont think it would be hard. This is what I get on a quick IL2 run with the app..

No problem. The best resources for the pico 4 I found were at the picoxr reddit and the link below. The guy at the link below appears to have the latest firmware/software and other tools available...

Pico Connect is pulling ahead of VD for me. It's just that much clearer for my setup (Pico4 / 4080 / 5800x3D)

How's that?

How are you running IL-2? With SteamVR?

And what type of connection you have - wired or WiFI?

Pico connect works very well both wired or by wireless. It only uses steamvr..
