Re-engaging with RoF - Basic Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello friends,

I have owned RoF since its original release on CD

After a long absence, I see things have changed (eg original forums have moved to IL2 and I needed to recreate a new login)

I’m motivated to enjoy this game again and immediately have some basic questions which google searches have failed to answer.
I hope you don’t mind a repeat of must have been covered many times here and can point me to some answers

Is the RoF CD still useful, or should I move to steam platform? (All of my game time has been solo offline since I never got good enough to get past the computer opponents even)

I plan to upgrade my 10yo PC.

What do I need for a good windows PC setup? (I have a HOTAS stick and rudder pedals and TrackIR)

Can RoF run on the Mac mini?

Is TrackIR still the best way to enjoy this sim? I’ve been dreaming of a VR goggle setup for RoF

Thank you for any advice. None of my friends are into (non-console) flight sims and google is a bottomless pit of none sense sometimes.

Happy New Year.

Hi there.

First off download the game free from here;

https://riseofflight.com/download/

Then if you can remember your original log in details you can do that and any purchases you made should appear. You get 3 free planes and others are available to buy in the store, around a $ a piece.

I imagine your PC should run ROF ok. I think it was released in 2009. Your stick/peddle/TrackIR would be the optimal set up, VR isn't available for ROF. I don't think it'll work with Mac.

That should get you going.

If you want to play ww1 in VR, why not start with FC1 here ?

Sorry, what is FC1?

'Flying Circus' - there's now 4 modules (FC1-4) all available to buy separately.

They're part of the 'Great Battles' series, the rest of the modules being ww2.

It's basically a new version of RoF, with 2 planes not in RoF (Snipe and a Siemens), and a few still missing - notably the float planes.

If you click on the 'IL2 Sturmovik' logo at the top of this page you'll find all the information you'll need.

There's a link to the Store there so you can buy anything you want.

You'd need a decent spec PC to play in VR though.

And note when you buy your first module you have to download the entire game - anything you buy thereafter gets 'unlocked'.

Thank you for that information I will look into it.
I don’t mind starting from scratch.
Is there information on recommended specs since I’m upgrading anyway?

thanks again

I'm not a VR user, so hopefully someone else will chime in with advice on specs for you.

What I can say is that I run the game fine in 4K on a flat screen, with an i5-7600 and an NVidia 1070.

A fairly dated PC these days.

The sale is still ongoing, so you might want to hurry up, because it may end at any moment now.

For the CPU, the 7800X3D or 9800X3D is ideal, since VR is quite demanding. However, everyone figured out that those CPUs are great for gaming (except for AMD, who made too few of them), so demand greatly outstrips supply at the moment. A more sensible option is to get a 7600X right now and then to upgrade just your CPU later to a X3D when the prices become a lot more reasonable (or wait one more generation to do that upgrade).

I would get at least 32 GB of DDR5-6000, although 64 GB is becoming the requirement for more and more games (in particular flight sims).

As for the GPU, I would say that a 4070 or better is what you should aim for. Keep in mind that new GPUs will be announced in less than a week, so this may result in better pricing on new cards, or good options on your local 2nd hand market.

And get a nice fat NVMe to store your games.

Note that the demands for non-VR are a lot lower.

Thank you both for your input

I’m off shopping

meanwhile reacquainting myself with RoF

I can’t count how many times I’ve (eventually) destroyed that poor convoy, but have zero luck in the air. I do enjoy just flying around in the different planes though

I'm also re-starting Rise of Flight after many years. I can login to my account and see the planes I bought, with activation codes. When I start the game (Logged in online) it says #10003: This plane is not available for your account (or plane data file was modified). I can see my purchased planes in game, online, when selecting for the quick mission, I am selecting the same plane type as my flight, and on my rise of flight webpage login, I can see the plane keys are Green, and activated. Also, I don't even know where the plane data files are, so how would I modify them? This is installed on Win 11 and I can even see the joystick recognised too. What am I missing?
