Roland_HUNter Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I heard that in 1944 the Fw 190 A-8 used MW-50 boost instead of the (currently known) C3 boost. Does anyone have information on how common this type was?
FTC_ChilliBalls Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 IIRC the A8 didn‘t use MW50 as BMW didn’t get it running reliably in the 801D-2 or TU. It‘s only on the 801TS that they achieved this, though I have yet to see any explanation of how they achieved that. I speculate that it‘s due to the cooling of the supercharger housing, which would reduce cylinder temperatures and thus somewhat reduce the effects of shock cooling, which according to Greg was the main reason of it not working in the D-2 1
JFS4_Eisbaer Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 (Translatet with deepL) Poor results with MW 50 E ́Stelle Rechlin: At the end of 1943, an attempt was made in Rechlin to take a similar route with the air-cooled BMW 801 D-2 engine as with the water-cooled engines from Junkers and Daimler Benz. By injecting a water-methanol mixture, an attempt was made to increase the engine output accordingly. This system was tested with the Fw 190, serial number 231, and the SKZ SB + IK over a period totalling 4.43 flight hours. At 2700 rpm, the boost pressure was increased to 1.5 ata near the ground. The measured cylinder temperature also only increased by a maximum of 7° C. The reduction in charge air temperature was 45° C during MW injection. Engine faults such as glow ignition or knocking could not be detected during the entire test. However, the increase in speed due to the increased emergency power was only 16 km/h at an altitude of 100 metres. As a result of the considerable expense of installation parts for the methanol system, it was decided for the time being not to introduce it in series production for the troops, especially as piston burns occurred during flight testing at the BMW manufacturing plant during methanol operation. 1 1
