Panzerlang Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Everything a simmer would like, except the 102 FOV. And the Super hasn't even started shipping yet. 1
chiliwili69 Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I really like to see more VR manufacturers to support PCVR and Pimax is clearly one of them. And I tried Pimax product twice in the past just for IL-2: Pimax5K KickStarter backer (Index was winner) Pimax Crystal Light (Quest3 was winner) In both cases the size and rotational inertia of the device was playing against Pimax product. Now I see, for the first time!!, thanks to other competitors (more than listen to users) they take into account the size factor!!. But there are three things I really don´t like from Pimax: - They always embark in multiple devices with multiple options rather than focus in just one or two. Making hard to meet their promises. - They announce (and sell pre-orders ) the new products and options very early, even without a working prototype, in this case just CAD drawings. - They play with the numbers in their sales pitch For example, regarding HFOV, they said 100º for the MicroOled option, but now they say 102º for the Dream Air: But any one them has been really measured in a proper tool since the Dream Air is just a CAD file. What about the VFOV, no clue about that. It look this Dream Air is using the same panels thant he Meganex 8K. The current problem of Micro-OLED panels is the size of the panel. For the time being, it is going to be difficult to have good FOVs (both HFOV and VFOV) in VR devices with Micro-OLED. Regarding the price, it is really confusing the last slide of the video: The 699USD price it is just the "Micro-OLED Optical Engine", in addition to that you have to buy the Full Crystal Super (no only microOLED option), So 1662€ + 33$x24 (or One-off $697) + shipping + VAT. The store price of the Dream Air is 1169€ + 33$x24 (or One-off $697) + shipping + VAT. 1
Aapje Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I like the form factor a lot better than the old headsets, but it's unclear whether the headstrap is replaceable, which is a must, IMO. Quote Yet another sku🤨 Two actually. The puck is also another product. This is yet another case of Pimax overextending themselves, thinking that they should do things because they are possible, even though Pimax clearly doesn't have the capability to do all these things. 1

My guess is that rather than "thinking that they should do things because they are possible" it is more a need to choke off any possible competition. It looks as though they have "imagineered" a competitior to the Megane X. 1
Aapje Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 You can't choke off the competition when you choke on production and QA issues. 1
firdimigdi Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Given the well-documented controversies I find it delicious they should opt for a product with "dream" and "air" in its name. That said, I hope they nail it this time or the damage will likely be too much. 4

The idea is to tie up pre-orders money. Whether the "imagineered" product ever becomes a reality is irrelevant to Pimax because they want cash NOW. By the time buyers realize they've been had, focus will be shifted to the next bright, shiny gimmick. Perhaps years of experience indicates that there is a bottomless well of gullible customers. What this new "Dream" offering may indicate is that Pimax is unlikely to invest money in QA/QC upgrades.🤔
firdimigdi Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 From what little we know about its specs it does tick most of the boxes (even at that price) but as they say "the proof is in the pudding". Let's hope they actually deliver as this seems to be in the "next-gen" direction that PCVR needs.

chiliwili69 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 I looks like Sebastian tested it, on paper all sound good...
chiliwili69 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 the nice thing is in minute 46, when they talk about the internal amount of supersampling which is needed for this new lenses and device geometry. At 1.0 resolution and 100% SteamVR the resolution is 5200x4100, which is much less than the needed by the Crystal Super 50PPD. So the ratio of pixels rendered/physical is 1.56, much less than the Crystal Super 50PPD (2.66!) Here the numbers: So it means that a 5090 (without any FFR, DFR, Upscaling, etc) can run that at 90Hz and adding a 130% supersampling. The bad thing is about the vertical FOV. They talk about that in minute 28. They measured the Horizontal FOV=112º (And per TestHMD app it is 115º) And they also measured the vertical FOV=88º (but per TestHMD app it is 113º, weird!!) I love horizontal FOV as much as vertical too. The great Index had HFOV=108 and VFOV=109. The reason I didn´t buy the Aero was simply because it had VFOV=88 1
giftgruen Posted September 22 Posted September 22 (edited) Well. To be honest Sebastian reviews each new Headset in a way that I - personnally (!) - watch it as advertising / promotion. Unless DreamAir is in RL experiences from users, I will not really "believe" anything. In theory it looks promising. Edited September 22 by giftgruen 3 1
