wolfitoXtreme Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Hello! I'm looking to purchase a new monitor within a budget of around 450 Euros, give or take. Currently, I play on a 27" FHD IPS display, but I’d like to upgrade for more screen real estate and better image quality. I’m considering either a 34" QHD curved ultrawide or perhaps a 32" QHD flat monitor. For 34" curved monitors, I’ve noticed most affordable options tend to use VA panels. My concern is the smearing issue that many people mention, as well as the potential downsides of the reduced screen height particulary for playing this game. On the other hand, for 32" QHD monitors, I’ve read some complaints about pixel density not being as sharp compared to smaller screen sizes. Does anyone here own a monitor with similar characteristics? I’d love to hear your advice or experiences to help me decide which option might be better for gaming. Thanks in advance! Cesar
Aapje Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 I don't notice smearing on my VA monitor, but perhaps I'm just not that sensitive to it. The issue with all display technology is that personal preference and your individual physical ability plays a major role, so something that can bother one person, can be invisible to another. That said, I think that a lot of opinions on VA are based on older technology and that smearing is less now. Anyway, I have a 27" QHD VA with a fairly modest curve. Quite happy with it, and it was less than half of your budget, but perhaps I just have cheap taste.
LLv34_Flanker Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 S! Got a 2nd hand Dell Alienware 34" curved IPS monitor at 120Hz. Resolution 3440x1440. I like it a lot, even it could use a bit more Hz. Curved is a must fir me, better for viewing IMO. Especially with a tracker. Samsung has good monitors in 32" and 34". Flat and curved. AOC also has good stuff.
wolfitoXtreme Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 (edited) Thanks for your feedback, guys! In the end, I went for an ultrawide AOC CU34G2X. Great improvement over my old 27" IPS. I can notice the ghosting with some of the monitor settings, as someone mentioned somewhere about the instrument gauges shimmering weirdly when moving your head in TrackIR. Apart from the monitor settings, I believe it’s also plane-dependent. I also noticed it in some fast-moving planes passing by. However, as I said, it depends on the monitor settings. Someone said also you lose vertical real estate because the screen height is slightly shorter than in a 27 monitor", but that difference is minimal, and the game adjusts to the resolution, so nothing is cropped. Plus, you really gain on the laterals, which is amazing. Overall, the image is nice, and the colors are much better than on my old monitor. Regarding the build quality, well, it feels very cheap, to be honest. But it’s the cheapest monitor in its price range, if someone on a budget like me, it’s worth buying. Cheers!
