Help please - game does not download

I needed to reinstall IL2GOB. I've now tried 4 times over the last couple of times and each time it starts downloading and when also almost complete and close to the the full size of the download it stops and says unable to update. I've tried with firewall etc off but with the same result.  It isn't a memory issue, I have more than enough spare.

I really need help because at present I'm completely stuck.

My system is-

Intel i7-14700k 3.4GHz
RAM - 32 GB Vengeance DDR5 6000Mhz
Nvidia 4080 super 16GB
storage 4TB Samsung 990 Pro M2 SSD
Motherboard ASUS ROG STRIX X790-F

Windows 11 - 2024-12 update for version 23H2

I've looked at the games update log on the failed install and it seems fine (not that I understand it) but the last part of it, copied below, points to a problem and it seems to be the same each time. Can anyone help me?

The error message seems clear: "Access is denied".

This means that the installer doesn't have the right permissions inside Windows to overwrite the stated file "C:\Program Files\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\bin\game\Il-2.exe" (or, less likely, to read "C:\Program Files\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\updates\24-12-16\copies\24-12-16_bin_game_Il-2.exe").

Make sure the stated directory (or better, the entire "C:\Program Files\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles" directory, now we're at it) is not read-only. To do so, navigate to "C:\Program Files" in File Explorer, right-click the "IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles" directory, choose "Properties", and in the "General" tab fully uncheck the "Read-only" attribute (it needs to be completely empty). Click "Apply" and try again.

Other things you may try are running the installer as Administrator (right-click the .exe, "Run as administrator") or deleting the IL-2 installation folder altogether. Whatever you do, make sure you've backed-up any files you want to keep (e.g. key bindings, career files) since the process will likely remove or overwrite them!

It is often suggested by certain people in the community to make files read-only in order to stop what they think are undesirable aspects of new updates. That's all fine and dandy, but unfortunately that behaviour is exactly what can cause issues like this when re-installing.

Thanks for the help. As it happened I managed to install it on Monday. All very odd I had changed nothing on my PC  between the successful reinstall the week before, the series of failed reinstalls and the successful one. Damned I know how it got be access denied. I never set programme files to read only - didn't even occur to me this is a thing. Main thing is I all back up and running and my various saves, skins etc put back in. The underlying problem that caused the game not to start and hence the reinstalls has also gone away. Happy days again.
