T.16000M (only stick) and keyboard bindings - new player question

Hi,

Well, I'm not completely new player but more returning player after many many years without playing any sim:)

Before I played on medium difficuly without any complex engine control etc so it was rather casual gaming

I need your help in some basic configuration for joystkick and keyboard.

I'm a bit overhelmed and honestly I would appreciate if some more experience player could propose some bind configuration for this setup

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Welcome to Il2, always good to see new people joining.

I used the T.16000M until I switched to another one but it's a good one for beginners.

Do you have TrackIr, or another head tracking device to look around?

Know that in Il2 every button can be used for multiple functions if you use them in combination with Shift, ctrl, win and alt (the games also distinguishes the right and left keys for those functions).

For complex engine management, you could use for instance (and this is just an example).

- Throttle = throttle axis

- Left Shift + hat switch up or down = prop pitch

- Left Ctrol + hat swith up or down = mixture

- Left Win key + hat switch up or down = elevator trim

- ... and so on

(If you have TrackIr, you can use your hat switch for even more functions as you won't need it anymore to look around)

It's really like you prefer personally. Also, it's good to keep in mind that several binds can be used for multiple functions, just make sure they don't interfere with one another when assigning them.

For example, you could bind elevator trim and stabilizer trim to the same command as, like in real life, planes have either one or the other and both basically do the same thing. Or, water and radiator control could also be used for the same bind as it's either one or the other as well.

Hope this helps you on your way a wee bit in the world of flight simming, you learn things step by step and the learning curve can be rather steep sometimes and I still learn things I wasn't aware off after all these years.

I don't know everything myself yet but feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Have a nice day.

And before I forget, here's a youtube vid of long standing member Col Ninny on how he set up his controls for Il2 using the same stick as you do:

Thank you so much for quick answers!

About additional hardware like TrackIR or throttle and pedals - I will be honest. I don't want to invest now too much because I'm not sure if I stick with IL-2 for long time (hopefully yes). If I enjoy that like old times I would definately buy full HOTAS

As for now I thought about buying some tracking hardware (because it's also useful in other games) - after some quick research I can see there is few hardware options (Trackit, Grassmoney etc) and some software options like smoothtrack, however I have a feeling that majority of players would recommend Trackir/Grassmonkey over smoothtrack/opentrack combo. I was thinking about Grassmonkey. Feel free to share your opinion anyway:)

you're welcome.

I don't have experience with Grass monkey.

I always used TrackIr and it does a good job for me.

You can always go to VR off course but that's a whole other subject.

Have a nice day.

I got one more question

As I mentioned before I always played with some "newbie" assistance options (throttle auto limit, engine auto control and radiator assist)

Do you think it's good idea to stick to that for some time and then switch to expert or better start with expert just from start even if the learning curve will be high for some time?

I started with expert. It really isn't that much more work and it keeps you from developing bad habits later.
