Sky_Wolf Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Have we heard anything yet about whether the new engine will be capable of modeling horses and wagons (which were common during WWII and probably in 1950s Korea as well)? Why not also have roaming cows and chickens while we're at it? 1
Avimimus Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 A lot of the North Korean logistics was pack animals and porters... so, yes, even in the 1950s it would be valuable for realism to have horse and ox. 1

What makes you think the new engine (or the current one for that matter) isn't capable of horse wagons? I'm pretty sure I've seen a horse wagon mod even for the old Rise of Flight engine 4 hours ago, Sky_Wolf said: Why not also have roaming cows and chickens while we're at it? I'm all for horses and other pack animals where these were used for military transport, but let's not get ahead of ourselves Of all things the Devs could spend their time on, roaming cows and chickens are pretty low on my priority list. 1
Avimimus Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Yes, there were mods adding horse drawn wagons, and even infantry columns to Rise of Flight. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to do the same for Flying Circus. It would be really great if the infantry technology they are developing for Korea could be ported back into Great Battles... or failing that, if they could let a third party modify the infantry from Normandy to have uniforms and weapons from other countries/periods. Anyway, I do think that chickens might be a bit too much. However, having pack animals (e.g. a horse with saddle bags and an ox drawn cart) could be important for simulating interdiction. Having an plough as an option for the Ox could also make crash landing in fields a bit more interesting!
jollyjack Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 syn_vander made great moving horses and charts for Rise of Flight

Well yes, *we* don't have the ability, but only because we don't have the proper tools The fact that there were horse wagon mods in RoF (which has an older version of IL2's engine, which is the basis for Korea's engine) pretty much answers Sky_Wolf's question whether the new engine will be capable of them. Of course, this is an entirely different question from whether there *will* be any cattle in Korea, which as always depends on time, money and priorities. 1 hour ago, Avimimus said: However, having pack animals (e.g. a horse with saddle bags and an ox drawn cart) could be important for simulating interdiction. I don't know about Korea, but the German army in WW2 used more horse-drawn than mechanised transports. Let's not even get started on WW1. IMHO, horse wagons are sorely needed. However, I don't think purely scenic cows in fields provide enough value compared to the static cows that are already in IL2, to warrant the effort.

There was some mechanisation - which led to specific tactics for hunting trucks at night (for instance). But the majority of DPRK logistics support was by train, and then pack animal (or human porter) for the remaining kilometres. 29 minutes ago, =MERCS=JenkemJunkie said: Depends how graphic they model their deaths, because you're all forgetting the most important reason for adding these, the memes. In a definitely not sad and demented insight into the hearts of the definitely not sick and twisted players, blowing up flesh and blood touches the soul more than steel and concrete. Conversely, one can just have the animal lie down peacefully - or even have the animal disappear but the cart/wagon remain. This is how it is handled with human in Il-2 & Tank Crew presently. It doesn't have to be graphic. I see no appeal in harm to animals - but I do see a need to accurately reflect what interdiction missions were against. WWI, WWII and Korea should ideally represent proper re-supply columns with horse drawn transport. 1
