Terrain texture LOD

Came back to Il2 BoX after a hardware refresh.
The 9800X3D has brought the sim to life in VR. Smooth on high settings even with Ambient occlusion! No more micro-stutters when chasing bandits or flying through busy battlefield! great stuff

One thing that still bothers me is the narrow terrain max LOD radius. Even with the max setting (X4) and on ultra preset details like rivers or crop fields a few KM away appear blurred and low detail.

Is this the status quo or is there a cfg file trick to force a wider radius like in the old days?

How do things in real life look a few Km away ?

Have you tried selecting 'sharpen' in the landscape filter on the graphics settings page?

Note: The landscape sharpen filter (drop down menu) is different than the sharpen check-box on the same page - they do different things.

Do you use OpenXR Toolkit?

Have you tried CAS sharpening at 80% to see if it helps?

You can increase the radius for the grass in the startup config file.

As a default it stands at 300 meters. You can set it say at 500 meters (or even more) and things look much better.

But if you go too far then you start having glitches and flashing patterns, I suppose texture is not handled well, maybe the size of the texture elements become too large.

You must have a powerful graphic card with lots of video ram. I use a 4090.

Try testing by increasing 100 meters at a time, and you will find the playable maximum limit for your sim.

I use all graphic parameters to the max/high/ultra settings with maximum distances, SSAO ON, HDR ON, Fullscreen ON, 4K Texture ON, Distant Buildings ON.

Antialiasing set at MSAA with a factor of 4.

do you use VR or monitor?

Monitor. VR remains a distant future goal.

Not like there's a sudden drop of at a predefined distance but rather a continuous decrease in detail. Which seems to me the question the OP asked.

There is a noticeable decrease in ground mesh detail and a sharp reduction in the quality of trees beyond a certain distance.

None of the previously mentioned fixes have any impact on either of these.

They won't, it's a limitation of the game engine. there was a TWEEK that would extend this somewhat around 8 years ago, but access to that file was taken away.

Well, if the gpresets.cfg tweak was possible, it ain’t an issue with the game engine, it‘s an issue of letting players access this setting which for some reason now falls under modding.

probably the 10km circle radius or so. Normally also the distance where initially planes would not be seen. As you fly this circle around you where LOD makes a step is very visible.

Same for large cities on the map that take time to load and where you see the popping up of details in patches. Worst is the BOBp. And if you look the opposite way and come back to look to the city again then the loading process starts again. Really immersion killer. It is a little better with BON but still far from perfect.

Let's hope the future graphic engine in Korea does not come with this kind of awful and very noticeable visual effects. We should get a stable and continuous details degradation with distance, combined with a stable visual display of all objects on the map (without buildup).
