Off road formation to individual tank waypoints

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to have a tank column comprised of six tanks traveling in an off road formation setting to, once they have reached a certain waypoint, to then act as individual tanks, out of formation, following their own waypoints?  If so, could one of you show me exactly how it can be done?  Thank you in advance.

Hmmm, Yes AND No

If you create a formation within the mission editor and want to split that into single members after reaching a waypoint (or any other tme)

NO

But creating them as single tanks (needs waypoints for each of them seperately) that could work.

The only problem is to keep them in a formation on the first part...

And I remember I've seem something usefull when trying to have more options for convois (ships)

From my memory:

There were distances between each unit triggered and the spees war increased or decreasen.

I wonder if you could use a "force complete" on the column and then trigger individual tank waypoints with a trigger timer?

delete the group once they get to their destination and spawn new tanks in the same positions with their own individual waypoints. With a bit of trial and error, you should be able to do the delete and spawn action very quickly, so it will be almost seamless unless someone is actually watching at the time..

If you use Activate rather than Spawn, I think you should be able to Force Complete the Formation command.

Then have each tank go to its own designated WP.

If you need to use Spawn which doesn't work with Formation commands -

  • You can link Tanks 2-6 to Tank 1 (acting as the leader).
  • They'll all follow Tank 1 to single WPs *
  • At the final shared WP - link it to a Timer, then link the Timer to individual WPs which are Object Linked back to the relevant Tank.
  • They should now go their own way to their exclusive WPs.

* This can be a bit messy, since the Tanks aren't acting under a Formation command.

For example - all the Tanks turn at the same time as Tank 1, and they'll all stop at the same time.

You maybe have to indulge in a little trial and error - adjusting the starting position of the Tanks.. shared WP positioning..

So they might crash into things / stop to fire on enemies etc. which can knacker things up.

But if you just have to move them into position before they get into any action, it's just a case of navigating them through the prevailing terrain until the split.

In short, no, but you can do the opposite which is to simulate a formation until they reach the point of separation and then have them follow different routes.

Nope, any command issued to a part of a formation goes up to the leader, or down to the formation. They behave as the same entity

Also not right

You could place the waypoints for each tank in the formation you want and have the lead tank trigger the following tank waypoints with the waypoints themselves, or with check zones, similar to how the taxi points work on airfields. When the lead aircraft passes a taxi point, number 2 advances to that point and number 3 advances behind number 2 from the previous point. You could do the same thing with the tanks

I thought I'd done that before, but it's been a while.

I'll have a look sometime !

Cheers Jaeger.

True, but that makes for such a slow pace as objects start and then stop at each point and restart. For the taxiing planes if you have many of them it is excruciatingly slow process as each plane takes time to move revving the engine etc.

For moving vehicles maybe you can time it so that they do not completely stop but that's a very tedious work to time it correctly. It is doable with all vehicles being the same. But if you have a mix of vehicles that have different speed and acceleration characteristics (tanks, trucks, cars) it becomes a nightmare.
