Formations and aerodrome behaviour

There have been some hints in the Dev Blogs but I am really hoping for some significant improvements in formation and aerodrome behaviour in the new sim.

Specifically, I’d like to see:

  • better AI taxying behaviour so that you can routinely start and finish a flight shut down at dispersal;
  • the ability to build ‘formations of formations’ on the basic core of the pair, which was pretty universal by that time (at least in western air forces) - i.e. section (pair) > flight > squadron > wing;
  • pairs takeoffs and landings (common by this time);
  • better circuit behaviour including initial and pitch (this will be needed for carriers anyway) so we don’t have aircraft milling about forever waiting to land;
  • better coordination of action by an AI as part of a pair, including radio callouts;
  • more realistically spaced formations;
  • cross-over turns.

Too much to hope for?

What have I overlooked?

One assumes they must have a good AI coder for this new sim.

The finger four formation really needs to be corrected. Number 2 should stay on the leaders wing and No. 3 and 4 should be on the other side as the second element. No. 4 needs to stay on the wing of No. 3. This would have to happen to execute crossover turns.

Elements need to work together as “sword and shield”.

AI needs to be improved in general, it was always a let down for me. 1946 had smarter ennemies than GB.

Would also be nice to see bombers operating in defensive Box formations or in earlier war in waves of 3.

There can be some good pair behaviour on the part of A.I. but standard formations seem to be limited and A.I. tends to fly turn and burn planes in the vertical and Zoomers in the Horizontal - maybe a little confused.

Ones gun convergence seems to make a difference to A.I. success as well.  Anyway - I did a Moscow flight in my trusty 110e and was just enjoying the frozen landscape and sun rise with large clouds to really care. 😁
