Chapter 1: Battle of France.

Mission#1 Battle of Arras

Allies Briefing:

Tuesday 21 May 1940.

14h00.

Gentlemen, Since the German breakthrough at Sedan on May 13th, our troops have been retreating towards the sea, pursued by the enemy.

The German army are attempting to encircle the Allies in northern France...
The military situation is extremely serious!

Today, French and British armored divisions are launching a counter-attack west of Arras (BG.14) towards the Arras Abbeville road (BG.13) to break the German advance and link up with our troops south of Somme river.

The orders are extremely clear,
Forward!!! No turning back.
We must at all costs prevent the encirclement of our armies north of the river Somme and join forces with the armies of the South.

As it has done since the beginning of the Battle of France, the Luftwaffe will send its formidable Stukas dive bombers to stop our counter-attack.

OBJECTIVES (Fighter pilots):

1) Wait for take-off clearance, then patrol the area Arras (BI.14) St pol sur Ternoise (BF.15) Bapaume (BI.12) and provide air cover over our armored divisions!!!

2) Intercept and shoot down all the enemy bombers, but beware of their escort fighters, the no less formidable Bf 109s and Bf 110s.

Keep one thing in mind, a pilot alone is a dead pilot! Stay grouped around your leader, keep an eyes on your wingman and dive into the enemy when you are sure to have the advantage.

Available aircrafts:

Hurricanes I (Rotol 100oct):

No 1 squadron at Hermelinghen (BB.20)

No 73 squadron at Guines (BB.20)

Dewoitne D.520:

GC I/3 2 Esc at Caffiers (BB.20)

OBJECTIVES (Bomber pilots):

Wait for take-off clearance, then head for the targets:

1) Units of the 7th Panzer division isolated by our attack retreat from St Pol sur Ternoise.
They were spotted on the St-Pol-Sur-Ternoise/Arras road (BF.15) , trying to reach the battlefield.

DESTROYED THEM!!!

2) Several columns of German reinforcements were spotted heading for the battlefield.

On the Arras/Abbeville road (BF.13).

On the Arras/Amiens road (BH.13) (BI.13).

DESTROYED THEM!!!

3) The Germans have set up a defensive position with 88 mm flak guns at St-Leger (BI.13.3) and Bapaume (BI.12.2)

DESTROYED THEM!!!

Available aircrafts:

Blenheim IV:

No 114 Sqn at Campagne-Les-Guines (BB.20).

The radar menu work TAB 7 1 give you the position of ennemy planes relative to your position if you are close enought.

TAB 4 menu gives you access to 'refuel and rearm.'
To use ' refuel and rearm'......undamaged aircraft must be stopped at an airfield, with engine, magnetos, and fuel cocks switched off.

Luftwaffe briefing:

14h00.

Comrades,

Since the breakthrough achieved by our troops at Sedan on May 13th, the Allied armies have been retreating several dozen kilometers every day.

One more effort and we'll have surrounded a large part of the BEF and the best French divisions!

This morning, several enemy divisions launched a violent counter-attack west of Arras, isolating part of the tanks of General Rommel's 7th Panzer Division!
They were cut off from their supply lines and tried to fall back towards the Arras Abbeville road. Their last known position is Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise. (BF.15)

Our ground troops are trying to establish a defensive line southwest of the city on the Arras-Abeville road (BG/BH.13)
But none of our anti-tank weapons seems capable of stopping the allied armoured vehicles

The situation is very worrying, if the Allies manage to link up with their troops south of the Somme, they could reverse the military situation and inflict a heavy defeat on us.

At the request of General Rommel, groups of Stukas dive bombers arrive to stop the advancing Franco-British tanks!

OBJECTIVES (Fighter pilots)

Organise yourself into two groups:

1) A close escort group :

Available aircrafts:

Bf 109 E1, E3, E4

I./JG 54 at Rosières-En-Santerre (BH.8)

Wait for take-off clearance, then follow the ground control messages, which will direct you to the rendezvous point with the bombers.

2) A Free hunt group:

Available aircrafts:

Bf 109 E1, E3, E4

II./JG 54 at Roye-Amy (BI.7).

Bf 110 C2, C4, C7

III /ZG 76 at Montdidier (BG.7)

1)Wait for take-off clearance, then patrol the area Arras (BI.14) St pol sur Ternoise (BF.15) Bapaume (BI.12) and establish air superiority there.

2)Protect Stukas arriving in the area.

3)Prevent any intervention by British bombers!!!

OBJECTIVES (Bomber pilots):

Wait for take-off clearance, then fly to the southwest of Arras, on the Arras-Abeville road. (BG/BH.13), this is where enemy tanks concentrate their attack, destroy as many as you can!!!

Available aircrafts:

Ju 87 B-2

I./St.G 1 at Amiens-Glisy (BF.9)

Here is an extremely simplified map to help you understand the general situation on 21 May 1940 at the time of the battle.
