How's the CG-4A ?

Recommended Posts

IRL I've been a glider pilot for 44 years, so soaring is my way of flying, and I decided to "jump again" on IL-2 and just purchased "Normandy" while waiting for "Odessa"...

One of the Collector Planes is the CG-4A, and I am tempted to buy it too, as well as the DC3 or the LI-2, but I would like to know from you who own it, how you find it modelled and how good is it to use in missions?

Are there any public servers where one can choose the CG-4A?

Thx for any hints !

Well the glide ratio is about 12/1 - which is pleasant enough but doesn't permit soaring.

It does give a bit of that relatively peaceful gliding experience, night landings excepted, and if one wants something more exciting one can always try to land on the roof of one of the forts from flying circus.

In my opinion, it is a fun addition - but isn't quite as fun as flying a higher performance glider. I built a bunch of interwar high performance gliders for X-Plane (e.g. Kupper Ku-4, DFS Seeadler, Kuzakova MAK-8), and that is where I usually go if I want a gliding fix - but it is still nice to cruise above the Il-2 landscapes.

If you want higher speed gliding experiences, you might also consider the Ar-234B or even the Ta-152H-1 - as both were influenced by sailplane designs. You can always climb and then switch off the engines. That said, while they have relatively good glide ratios, their glide speeds are pretty high - so it feels quite different subjectively.

On the other hand, if you like the experience of light aircraft with low wing-loadings - and you are willing to put up with an engine - the Flying Circus modules are a good choice - especially the early war aircraft (Flying Circus Vol.III and Vol.IV)... they give a lot of the low-speed low-wing-loading aerodynamic feel that people associate with gliders.

 @Avimimus,

thank you for your rather informative reply !

Since I also use XP, wonder if those interwar gliders are available for download ? I didn't find them at the ".Org" ?

A am a bit critic about how glider aerodynamics are treated in X-Plane, namely fuselage aerodynamics and their effects even in sideslip conditions, there being no way to porperly tackle negative flap settings, etc..., but would relly like to try your gliders !!!

Sure, it would be fun to talk about this. However, this is getting off-topic for the main forums - so I've created a thread here:

P.S. The gliders were never released because my plans to produce 3d cockpits never materialised. I wanted to have at least basic 3d models for the interiors and ran out of time. If you know anyone who would be interested in doing a few 3d models (even ones without textures), I'd be happy to share.

Getting back on topic: I'd be quite curious if you'd agree that the earlier Flying Circus modules are good recommendations in this case!

Again, thank you @Avimimus for your contributions, and starting that other thread 👍

Meanwhile, I just added the CG-4A to my IL-2 collection and will try it ASAP !
