Tank Throttle/Brake Mapping Conundrum

If I want to use analog controls for throttle instead of buttons (which ostensibly one wants for something like 'throttle'), it looks like it's trying to make me map it to the same control as the brake (??!!).  Problem is, there aren't many controls with that perfect "middle", below which will reverse, and above which will go forward.   Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's really unusual for the throttle and the brake to be the exact same control, and I'm not sure what they were thinking or going for here.  I'm sure they had something in mind, do you know what it was/is?

 

How do most of you have it mapped?

 

Is there any way to map 'forward' to the right toe brakes and 'reverse' to the left toe brakes?
