AI Escort Fighters repeatedly collide with each other on RV with my bomber squadron in Career mode mission

Playing a Career Mode mission, Kuban campaign, phase 2.

Flying Pe2, my squadron reaches waypoint 2 to RV with the escort fighters.

Escort fighrers are Spitfire Mk Vb.  Once they RV with us, the top Spitfire repeatedly descends directly onto the 2nd Spitfire and causes a crash which wipes them out and sometimes also one or more other Spitfires beneath them

Seems to happen with Spitfires but when i had Yak escorts, the problem did not seem to occur

 

Something seems to be wrong with how the Spitfires fly immediately after they RV with the bombers.
