Improvements to career mode

I just started a career for the first time in years. 
 

IL-2 ‘41 Battle of Moscow.

 

I am being intercepted in over half the missions. The AI enemy attacks me and I try to get away and my AI flight doesn’t get attacked (aside from a few inaccurate shots) and doesn’t do anything to evade.

 

Highly unrealistic. I remember reading that career mode has improved over time but I’m not seeing any evidence of this yet. 
 

Can anybody explain this?
