DFLion Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 DFLion_The Battle of Aachen 02 This is the second mission in the 'Battle of Aachen' series. You will fly (as Pierre Clostermann) in his Tempest, now that he has been posted to RAF 3 Sqn. Clostermann leads a 6 aircraft flight to provide air protection over Aachen as the battle develops on the ground. Typhoons from RAF 247 Sqn will provide 'flak suppression' over the City. (as you start-up, watch them take-off) Mission notes: I suggest at the start you put the mission on autopilot and watch the Tempests taxi out for take-off, this will 'sync' the mission timing. I have updated this mission to make it work better in our latest version of the game - watch out for the Luftwaffe, they are desperately defending the City of Aachen. Geezer Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Love your missions! Downloaded and flew this one today. Followed waypoints. Intercepted a flight of FW's. Destroyed them. Afterwards there were no more waypoints to follow so RTB. Got a mission failure. What did I miss?
DFLion Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 Thanks Mysliwiec, After completing the dogfight successfully, you fly to the next mission waypoint, 'that is the one after the one you started the dogfight at'. This waypoint should pick-up your aircraft and guide you back to base on autopilot. I haven't programmed 'mission failure or success' in single missions - you know when you get back to base intact you have survived! Hope this answers your question. I am gradually working on the rest of these missions and should have the next one out soon. DFLion
Geezer Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 (edited) Thanks. That's what I attempted to do. The next waypoint icon never appeared. I returned to the original flight path and followed it back to base. I have experienced strange things in other missions as well lately. In Tip's P-38 Interchange mission we are enroute to the target when my wingmen break off at Galeen and attack ground units that aren't there. There are icons for enemy positions (none for friendly) and ground fire is being exchanged, but there are no units there. My wingmen attack over and over with no result. In his other P-38 Ripper Five mission we were engaged by a flight of 109's. After a brief fight they started to bug out. We gave chase. They suddenly exploded...simultaneously! Nothing on the map afterwards to indicate they went down. In other missions the waypoint icons may or may not trigger the next waypoint. Some do while others do not. I resaved all missions with the editor. I then flew yours and the P-38 Interchange mission again with the same result. In yours I decided to fly to Aachen to see if that triggered anything. There I found a flight of P-47s just orbiting in formation. Later, on the map, it indicated they did take out one enemy position. I instructed my wingmen to attack ground targets, but they would not. That, however, is not unusual. I have found that whenever I am on an intercept mission my wingmen will not attack anything on the ground...usually. They will attack air targets if on a ground attack mission, though. This has been the case since I started flying IL-2. The other occurrences, though, are indeed unusual. Also, I use autopilot up to the point of takeoff for this mission as suggested. I will try it again and turn on autopilot after the 190 engagement. Edited August 31, 2024 by Mysliwiec
Geezer Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 I can certainly ignore the "Mission Failed" outcome. I was just wondering what other action I might have been missing out on.
ZPA_Malan Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 is there a place where you have all the clostermann missions in one spot, or would you consider making them a full campaign?
DFLion Posted September 3, 2024 Author Posted September 3, 2024 Firstly, Mysliwiec, I will reply to you in my next reply. ZPA_Malan, yes I do have all the Clostermann missions in one spot, which I am constantly upgrading in parallel to the game upgrades. I am always trying to add more interest to each mission and now that 'Korea' is on the horizon (which I can't wait for!), game upgrades may slow down. Eventually, I want to make a series of Clostermann campaigns. My big problem at the moment is the time factor - I have just taken on some more volunteer work which is 'eating in' to my flight sim mission building time. DFLion
Geezer Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 No worries. I understand being busy. I just wanted to provide some feedback in case there might be a bug. I flew another of Tip's fine missions involving Normandy P-51Bs. There was another incident of ground units being there but not really there. Again, icons showing enemy forces but not friendly. Exchange of ground fire. No actual targets. At least this time my wingman wasn't inclined to attack. In the P-38 mission I am not the lead so cannot call them off. Perhaps this is a way of giving the feel of more going on without putting any additional strain on computer resources?
