santaclaus99 Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 This has to have been discussed though I can't find it. So I'm going to throw it out there maybe again. Sorry for a repeat if that is what it is. Many people know what these are but to say it out loud these are markings along the cockpit or other appropriate place that indicate how many kills you have. I'm not well researched on how other countries did this or even if they did outside of America. In the U.S. a swastika or rising sun was placed under the canopy on the port side for every kill. Obviously, given European law the swastika can't be used but the easy substitute is the iron cross or 4 bar emblem currently placed on vertical stabilizers. This would be fun to see during career mode or in online mode when you are selecting the loadout for your plane and see the representation of that plane in that space. Yeah, you'll never see it while flying in the cockpit but losing this representation on the side of the plane should you go down and die or be captured I think would add a level of stressful fun. 1 4
AbraxasGSD Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 (edited) I’ve been thinking about this for a long time as well. Many older games have had varying levels of this. 1942 Pacific Air War would put kill markings on a side shot of your plane in your pilot profile. Some games would let you modify plane skins to add kill marks on your own. There have been games that would let you add all sorts of different nose art to the plane, like the original IL2 game! I would love to get more immersion like this, seems like it would be possible with modern tech. Edited July 18, 2024 by AbraxasGSD 4
ZPA_Malan Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Yeah this would add a lot to immersion in any type of career/campaign. Could maybe be developed from the existing lettering system? As with any new feature, more likely in the new game than for BoX if it does happen. 2
tattywelshie Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 They even had this feature in B17, where your tally of missions and kills were replicated on your aircraft.
BlitzPig_EL Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 The problem I see is that skins are not transmitted over the net to online players. To see custom skins, or modifications (such as kill markings) to standard skins would require said data transfer between players. With the size of skins (4K) we have now this would increase load on client and server computers and connections and create more problems (latency issues) than it would solve. Of course this wouldn't matter in the single player game, so maybe it could be implemented for single player only, but I feel there are more important issues that need addressing first.
LuftManu Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 It would be cool if a decal could be shared and dowloaded instead That would be a lot less size and maybe even doable!
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 If you had a good streak going, you'd be advertising for the whole server to shoot you first, like walking down a dark alley covered in bling, with hundred dollar bills sticking out of your pockets. 1
Trooper117 Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 When you are in the cockpit flying a mission, you wouldn't even see your own kill marks... you could have the whole underneath of your aircraft painted pink with red spots and you wouldn't see that either... for me kill marks are a waste of time.
ZPA_Malan Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 (edited) Seems issues with MP could be avoided by simply turning them off as you say- idk i'm not really big on MP so not something i see as a reason to limit the rest of the game, especially if it can be solved with a toggle. Hook_Echo Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 Skinning is really rewarding once you get into it. Once you have a skin done, it is really easy to go in and copy paste more victory markings. I do this for some careers. It's pretty easy to find markings online. And when you make a skin of your own the plane is truly yours. Gimp is free, there are tutorials for skinning on youtube, and the templates have a lot of options, so you don't really need a lot of artistic skills for the basics. You just hide or unhide things and export it. 2
1CGS LukeFF Posted July 23, 2024 1CGS Posted July 23, 2024 For this to be supported officially to work like the tactical code decals would require a lot of work modifying each plane's visual parameters, so unfortunately I don't think you're going to see anything like this for Great Battles.

I know it's whole lot of work. But I'm sure the modding comunity would be very eager to help, inclusing myself. This and other tweaks (mainly in tank progressions, list of kills, kills confirmations etc.) are features i'd kill for to have in a career mode. I know you guys are really focused on the whole Korea thing, which is great, but there is a really big bunch of a people who'd like to keep WWII series runing, improved and enhanced. It has so much unreliesed potencial
percydanvers Posted July 24, 2024 Posted July 24, 2024 If you really want to do it, you could have a custom skin you use in your career that you just manually modify after each mission copying and pasting victory markings. If you think about it, it's less effort than would be involved in actually painting victory markings on a real aircraft.

But it's pain in the a** to restart the game after every kill to do it etc. So I think the effort wolud be worth the outcome 🤷🏻♂️ I'd be very glad to mod aformentioned career features, but it isn't possible without the source code. I'd be celebration day it'll be moddable one day
Knarley-Bob Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Once you are killed wouldn't the "Kill marks" be moot? Or is there going to be a "Killed" spot for that number? A tally board of "Kills" and "Been Killed" would be cool. I'd be an "Enemy" ace by now.😲
