Some Graphic Design Fun - CLoD Logos

Been messing around with some design software last couple of days, thoguht i'd take a swing at some Cliffs of Dover logos and branding.

I know Cliffs of Dover is more an indentification nomenclature, as Desert Wings - Tobruk and Fortresses and Focke-Wulfs - Dieppe (forgot to add Dieppe in the F&F logo, oops) both do not feature it, but of course it is the base module and therefore can be considered as the defining DLC. Given that each module has a quite long name in full "IL2 Sturmovik, Cliffs of Dover, Desert Wings - Tobruk" I thought a more simpler logo would be cool.

Each roundel color I tried to represent each module, Blitz being Battle of Britain I jyst stuck with RAF A-1 roundel, Tobruk and 6.5 DLC ("Night Wings" is my own creation, it is not official in any way) the colors are based off the environment of combat (desert + night), and Dieppe considering we get P-51's and B-17's I did the roundel in USAAF colors.

Anyways, feedback would be appreciated, but I hope you all enjoy it.

FWIW, my thoughts- numbered left to right, top to bottom :

#1 = Good, like it.                                                                                                              #2 = Like it but keep the RAF roundel in RAF colors

#3 = Like it, but make the roundel a USAAF white star on the round blue field.          #4 = OK, but again, keep the rounded in RAF colors

#5; #6; #7; #8 = doesn’t do anything for me…….

My thoughts and they’re worth ………….

Only forum lurkers know it as "CLoD" (SandCLoD, CloDerfocke etc)

I doubt the devs or fulcrum would want their game associated formally with an English  word that means lump of earth or is slang for a stupid person.

I’ve always wondered why Cliffs of Dover is abbreviated CLoD or CloD instead of CoD? Is it because of the delicious fish? 🐟

For sure if the game name was abbreviated to CoD it would draw more attention, even if there ain't Chips included in your Google search bar.

Search for "Tobruk & Chips" delivered this BTW: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rats_of_Tobruk.

There's an actor called Chips Rafferty involved in that film, so one might never know.

Also maybe this story can be involved as historic campaign setting for Cliffs-Tobruk?

CoD is the most obvious acronym to use for "Cliffs of Dover". Party because it's easy to say and it sounds good, and party because that's how acronyms work. The problem is there's already a game with that acronym. In case anyone's been living under a rock for the last couple decades, it's kind of a popular game franchise too. I've seen CoD used on these forums before but not for quite a while now. Of course it's not very confusing within this forum or even within the combat flight sim community, but not everyone spends their whole lives within only that context. So having an acronym that won't be confusing to non-simmers is useful. Hence we have the silly sounding "CloD".

I find silly things amusing so I naturally latched on to using CloD pretty quickly. I wouldn't use it in an official capacity though. "CLIFFS" or "Cliffs" is also a common short hand that sounds a little more "professional". I suppose just "Dover" might also work.

Good work though. I definitely agree the blue-white only should be a US star roundle though. Otherwise it makes me think we're getting a Greek DLC. You probably just left the circle because is was easier though. I'd also change the order of darkness on the monochrome ones. Yellow should be light, blue should be dark, white - white, and red - medium.

Interesting side note: Apparently the chemicals used in some really old monochrome films behaved kind of funky with reds and blues. I think most humans would assume that red would show up much lighter than blue in black and white. A lot of film back then produced the opposite of this though. That's why a lot of period photos of French planes look like they have British roundels, and British planes look like they have French roundels.

By the way, I think I've usually seen it spelled "CloD" not "CLoD".

Does anyone think "CofD" (pronounced "caughed") could catch on? Or is that worse than CloD? Hehe.

Likely to differentiate it from Call Of Duty. An unfortunate happenstance.

Sure you're joking Puma, and that's fair to me, but I'm not British so I didn't get it. Who's that Cliff saying "don't get me involved"? What exactly is the reference?

He's a 1950s pop singer. Had a long career and still going.  There a sort of sub reference to an actual cliff and Cliff Richard in a quite famous 1980s British comedy show called the young ones and that kinda burned into the british psyche.
