HazMatt Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 (edited) Welcome! Different servers are good at different times on different days. It's really hard to say. Some servers can be good one Friday and not the next Friday for example. If I were you I would try them all out and see what you prefer. The best voice comms in my opinion is the CombatBox server. If you download and install IL2 SRS (there is a DCS one too so make sure you get the right one) For example when you start up on combat box you call the tower on channel two "tower" and request a call sign. After that you request taxi clearance and then takeoff clearance. (you may be denied if somebody has declared an emergency landing until that plane has cleared the runway) Once you take off you will want to switch over to channel one "command" You can call in a strike target and command will try to vector friendly fighters to cover you if they request mission. You can request a mission and command will vector you to the enemy. In addition to this you can do things like "request picture" of a sector to see how many enemy have been detected there. (helpful if you're on a bombing run) One that I find useful is you can request location and they will tell you the sector that you are currently in. (helps if you get lost like me) You can also call tower and request a vector to the nearest base. They will respond with bearing and distance. If you're plane is shot up you can ask tower to declare an emergency landing and they will halt takeoffs so you don't have to worry about avoiding traffic on landing In addition to this command will advise you of bandits and give you range and bearing to something that has been detected recently. (don't count on this though) Other pilots use channel 1 but will sometimes switch to another channel if there gets to be too much traffic or if they are flying a multi-ship strike package. I'm sure there's a bunch I left out but I believe the SRS integration on the combat box server makes it one of the most immersive. Another thing about the servers is that although there are players off all levels there, there are some guys that have been playing for years and if you have don't have experience in other sims you might find it a bit tough to survive. My best advice I could give you in the event that you are new to online sims is to not fly straight and level unless you're in a low threat environment and to fly low to the ground where you will be off the radar and the enemy will not be vectored to intercept you. In addition to this, when you are low to the ground you are harder to see and the enemy will be silhouetted against the sky. In addition to all this, on certain days combat box has a "Radar Control Officer" who is an actual person doing the vectoring and such from reading the radar. If you want to work on just quick and dirty dog fighting skills the "normal" server has icons and air starts and some good sticks. There is a "dog fight" server with AI and other players but no icons so it helps if you working on learning to ID planes so you don't shoot friendlies. I'm in Texas time so you're 7 hours ahead of me so if my math is right it would be noon until 3 my time that you would be on. I'm sometimes on during this time and I'd be happy to help with anything that I am able to. Just let me know. Hope this helps. Edited July 5, 2024 by =HazMatt=HazMatt

HazMatt Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Salute. I flew aces high for many years and enjoyed it. However I guess I expect more when you have to pay close to $200 a year per account to play it. (I have 4 accounts here so my kids can play with me online.) They especially like driving around in tanks. Recently I got sick of the "mods" in aces high warning and muting specific people for things that others are not warned are muted for, a bunch of exploits for changing values in memory all over the internet, (giving your plane zero fuel weight for example) and nothing being done about it, the lack of any new content in years, and the owner seeming to have decided to run it into the ground. An example of this is the tempest there doesn't even have a control stick to use in VR. I've decided to make IL2 my new home and have been very happy here. The only downside for me is in the evenings here the numbers have already dropped. The biggest advice I could give you coming from AH is to work on your SA. Since there is no "radar" and icons here as there were in aces high, there's a very good chance that you will get "bounced" When I first started it happened to me often enough that it got to be frustrating. It happens to me much less often now but I don't fly straight and level and tend to check my 6 often. Now when I get bounced it's usually because I get distracted by looking at my map or something like that. Also be aware that if you run into a bad guy there is a good chance that there are other once in the area. Many times I've been killed by a guy I didn't see while engaging one that I did. SA is very important here. 1
