Editing these videos with AI was a new thing for us, and yes, we know where we need to improve with that. Dev Blog entries aren't going away - it's going to be a mix of them and the videos.

 

People wanted more communication than what we gave them in the past, and that is what we are ultimately doing. 🙂

I'll admit to not paying too much attention but it was my impression people just wanted some communication in the void that was left after Jason's departure of which there was really nothing more than knowing winks and wait and see's. The impression Im personally left with however is of dev team happy to throw non russian speaking customers crumbs out of which volunteers are trying to cobble together something that passes as a new era of comunication. 

 

Im sure it will settle in time and, I wish you every success.

I'm not sure what you really expect here? Do you really think every American game developer should do hour long videos in Russian? Should they then re-record the same interviews in Chinese? In French? In Spanish? Or is it alright for American developers to hire a translator? Or is there a double standard here?

 

What I'm seeing is: Developers investing in providing information to the community long before release or pre-orders begin. This is not a typical financially driven hype train type of approach. In fact, I think it might seem unfamiliar and like poor communication because they are actually aiming at communication rather than pumping up presales (like many larger developers). They are also being very candid about their decision making processes and sharing a lot more than most game studios.

 

If one actually pays attention, there is a tremendous amount of information released for the English speaking community.

I guess Im just not as invested in it as you as to sit though a tide of talk to pick out the nuggets. As I said. I wish you well with it.

How much of the Earth's population speaks English, vs how much of the population speaks Russian? Yes, there is a double standard and its for a completely logical reason.

You’re quite right; it really does seem like unfamiliar and poor communication. 
The forty-five second long ‘reveal’ video comprised ten seconds of flying over the sea, even though we’re not getting carriers and five seconds of afterburner. Leaving us with a generous twenty-five seconds of….nothing.

So far the screenshots released seem to have much of the community asking “so what’s new?”

 

The discussion video between Daniel and Albert hardly does either of them justice. We know they both speak reasonable English and they both have a passion for their product but frankly they could have been talking about the timetable for the Moscow Metro for all we know.

 

Since this was purported to be about the history of the studio and their part in IL2, I do like the way Jason is being airbrushed out of that history in a very soviet style.😎

I'm with you. The language is immaterial. The videos are so slow you can time the relevant information dissemination with a calendar. I can do without fluff/banter, just get to the point and give me info I can read now. Then I can refer back to it instantly as needed, without having to scroll back and forth through a slow video to eventually find it. 

I'm not saying they can't or shouldn't make videos. They can do what they want, and I can decide if I want to watch or not. Since they seem to do both videos and blogs, win/win.

1) You are misusing my words (perhaps intentionally?). I was saying that aiming at communication rather than sale hype might seem unfamiliar to most people. We're so used to people overselling their product, rather than communicating with users, that anything which doesn't really hype up the features may cause those features to be missed.

 

Similarly, I've in the past pointed out that we've gotten so much communication from this team, that anything resembling a normal pace of communication for a game studio seems like an absence of communication from some people. My honest impression is that the level of transparency from this studio is higher than that of other game studios, including flight simulator studios. The only rivals might be a handful of extremely small indie developers.

 

That said, from some of the comments it seems clear that the PR approach could be refined in a number of small ways, and as I've said before - if I were them I'd probably wait longer to share less.

 

I'm glad they are sharing so many details though, and we should be glad - even if it sometimes means we have to pay attention.

Let's not be too ridiculous about this. This is conspiracy theory level nonsense.

 

A few observations:

- Jason Williams remains in the credits to the game

- Jason Williams was given a farewell video when he parted ways

- He interacted with the English speaking community a lot, but he was only one of many different team members working on this project. There are more than two dozen people who worked full time on this - how many of them can you name? How many of them were named in the video?

 

There is an entire history going back to 2006 (I think) with Gennadich for the current game engine, and going back to 1998 for the Il-2 franchise - Oleg Maddox wasn't mentioned either (almost no one was mentioned by name in the interviews).

 

I am just a humble forum moderator - basically a forum member who has a role in keeping the peace - but it is obvious, even to me, that what you are saying goes completely against the evidence.
