Unrealistic AI behaviour

Hi everyone. Been ages since I did any flight simming but just reconnected my hotas setup and have been giving it a go back again in IL2 Great Battles and also CloD.

 

Great Battles was frustrating performance wise on my old machine but otherwise the flying experience, qmb, dogfights vs AI etc, has been quite enjoyable.

 

CloD on the other hand, it's always been my all time favourite sim. But I have been reminded why all the best fun was in multiplayer.

 

The singleplayer AI once again is still really disappointing. The two main problems are the insane rolls and jinks whenever the AI wants to evade, and then the "dead fish" behaviour when they just sometimes decide to ignore the fight completely and then just fly straight and level back to base.

 

The crazy rolls are totally unrealistic, no matter what plane it is they can roll considerably faster than any actual player, and it makes the dogfights vs AI not fun at all. They don't dogfight you using turns, climbs, dives, any realisitic maneuvers. They just enter this crazy mode where they spin like mad. This behaviour has been in the game for years, since pre TF even. Is there any chance this mightget fixed in the near future? It's a huge blocker to enjoying the game offline. I'm afraid my return will probably be very brief as it's just impossible to have fun flying against these unrealistic opponents.

 

 

PS - another big problem is the AI gunnery. They miss often and they shoot the longest bursts, not correcting their aim. Not uncommon to see an AI plane line up on another, expend their entire ammo in one long burst that is missing just high or just low the entire time.

Good luck getting an admission that this phenomenon exists. I've described it as "target drone" behavior. It has been described repeatedly over many years, but never acknowledged as far as I am aware.

We hope to have a release with updated roll behaviour this summer.

Thanks Buzzsaw. Glad to hear it's being worked on. Appreciate what you guys at TF are still doing for this sim.

Hope TF get this sorted out. On one mission I expected to face a turkey shoot flying a Hurricane against CR.42s but they jink and roll like model aircraft.

I may be in the minority but I think the “drone” or “dead fish” AI planes are the most realistic AI behavior I’ve yet seen in IL-2. The fact that AI always knows where you are is completely unrealistic. I never get a chance to sneak up on them from underneath or behind before they evade. As soon as you shoot AI evades, as they should, but you have a chance to catch them unaware (like I often am in multi-player).

It is entertaining but sometimes also quite exhausting to follow the discussions about unrealistic unmanned arial vehicles (UAV) in an unrealistic virtual real atmosphere ...
