So is this on a new engine, or is it just an expansion of the current engine such that new underlying improvements will also benefit GB users?

It is a new generation of the game engine (a new engine would imply coding everything from scratch).

However, the general opinion seems to be that most of the new features won't make it into the existing titles. They will still receive support (additional maps and collector planes are planned), but it seems quite unlikely that there will be a major overhaul of already released modules. Korea appears to be using a completely redone damage modelling system, new PBR textures and lighting - features which seem to be incompatible with existing aircraft.

We are still awaiting final clarifications on this though! It was stated that redoing all of the aircraft to the new standards would take a long time to complete and can't be done currently.

Looking at new scenery and clouds pictures I don't see a much  difference. Little disappointed. I hope at least we see new tech from deep learning department and native OpenXR implementation.

WIP, as stated by Regingrave. 🙂

Yes, work in progress, but I see a huge difference: The clouds are arranged as if a cold-front is coming through, suggesting different areas of weather on different parts of the map... and more complex cloud masses.

Similarly, the city picture shows a greater variety of buildings and district types.

One can increase the detail of ground textures or replace buildings with higher resolution ones (at the cost of system requirements) - that is fairly easy. What I see are a lot of deeper changes 'under the hood' which provide a basis for significant improvements in realism as well as quality. I find it surprising that people don't see this... goes to the whole 'graphics' vs. 'art' vs. 'simulation/world building'... people seem to often miss how it is easy to upgrade something with new 3d models - but the actual visual quality requires the other two as well.

For me the Rise of Flight was a combination of high fidelity graphics together with artistic touch on the top. Color palette, menus, attention to details

lighting everything was a pleasant to eyes. Unfortunately I can't say same about BoX.

As one was made by enginner and artist other by enginner.

Reason this matters to me is that it feels that (logically) GB will become abandonware with little new development in the WWII theatre. I get that it might be in the best interest of the business to move on, in this case Korea but as a WWII theatre fan it feels like the death of GB, much like Tank Crew isn't really moving forward especially since the whole WWII pacific theatre wasn't explored in GB. Is what it is, but seems like a major inflection point.

I’ve been flying il2 since 2000-2001 when it first came out. Played jane’s ww2 fighters before that.  Love great battles and fly exclusively in VR.  Fly offline mostly.
