the_emperor Posted June 22, 2024 Posted June 22, 2024 per ingame and historic manuals the max water temp for the Yaks engine is 100C currently I can run the engine at ~114C while overheating starts to occur at ~115C
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted June 22, 2024 Posted June 22, 2024 This is a crappy google translation, so the English is messy but do any other pictures you have show what the single * note is linked to? It mentions 100°, so I'm assuming the water temp? If so it would indicate that the engine's life would just be reduced to 100 hours when you're over 100°, not that the engine should soon die at 101°. It would make sense that the imminent death temp would be higher than 100° (115°) if that's the case. 1
the_emperor Posted June 23, 2024 Author Posted June 23, 2024 No. it should dy instantly. just the overheating limit in game should be 100C as its in in the ingame description as well from the 1945 Yak-9 manual: Yak-1 Yak-7
the_emperor Posted June 23, 2024 Author Posted June 23, 2024 Also from the 1943 Yak1/7/9 manual 110C max with a time limit of 10min
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 Those pics all say don't do it, but they don't say why you shouldn't do it. Nothing about imminent death as soon as the limits are exceeded, could just be increased engine wear like the first pic hinted at.

No problem <3. Personally if going between 100-114 does nothing I'd rather not have a false warning. These temp limits seem to be motivated by the same belief of the manual writers that decided the engine timers that the average pilot is too stupid to decide for himself when he should keep the temps under 100, and when he should go balls to the wall, so they just cater to the lowest common denominator and give everyone a neutered limit. I'd rather only get the overheat message when I'm actually doing damage at 115+, since we don't care if the engine will die in 100 hours in this sim.

=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 (edited) The engine timers are rigid, but they seem to be doing something more nuanced with the temp limits, which I like. Have they said anywhere how they decide the real in-game temp limits? Nevermind, I found the answer to my question. In this thread one of the devs explained they don't use simple timers for the temps, they have something realistic modeled: "The thermal model of the motor is “dynamic”, heat is distributed over several elements of the system, and this is a dynamic process. There is no such thing as “if the water temperature is more than x degrees, the motor will be damaged.” The heat simply stops leaving the system - especially if the water has boiled - and then the cylinders begin to heat up instead of water, which after a while, as they warm up, will lead to damage."
