MW-50 Derating 1944 on DB605 series

Hi Folks,

I’m currently looking into the operational history of the DB 605 series engine(AM, ASM, DB, DC), particularly its use in 1944 with the MW-50 water-methanol injection system. I have heard that the engine experienced various periods of de-rating due to reliability issues.

  1. Were the DB 605 series engines de-rated specifically for the use of MW-50 at any points during 1944? similar to what happened with DB605A derating in 1943?
  2. Were there any operational directives that limited the use of MW-50 to less than 10 minutes at any point during 1944?

I would appreciate any info or historical references you could provide on this topic.

Thanks in advance!

Hej,

thus far all documents for StartNotleistung & Sondernotleistung (MW-50 substitudes Start&Notleistung) I have seen thus far show the following:

Start&Notleistung:

DB605a

1.42ata/2800rpm 3min

Sondernotleistung:

DB605 with MW-50

(>=)1.7ata/2800rpm for 10min

1.42ata (Start und Notleistung not longer available below FTH as throttle will be adjusted to go 1.7/1.8 ata...once your are out of MW-50 you are restricted to 1.3/2600)

Cheers

Is this for the same engine? Because so far everyone said you have to either use Sondernotleistung or, once you are out of MW 50, you are not allowed to go over Steig- und Kampfleistung (Climb and Combat power), so 1.3 ata.

But I don't see any reason, why the pilot shouldn't be allowed to turn off MW 50 after it is used and then use Start und Notleistung (Takeoff and Emergency power) for one or three minutes.

you are right.

MW-50 engines can run only on combat power once your run out of MW-50 juice as the throttle is adjusted for  Sondernotleistung boost past combat setting ✌️

No (although IIRC the earliest ones had some issues in climbing conditions due to too small oil tank, which was then increased to the 46 liter version).

ok that's interesting thanks Kurfurst! I've recently bought The Secret Horsepower Race: Western Front Fighter Engine Development by Calum E. Douglas, i haven't had time to go through it in detail but wonder if it's also mentioned there.

That’s probably the best overall book overall on engine development, the only thing I dislike about it is the constant hyperboles (‘X technical issue lost them the air war’) and the lack of coverage on Soviet engine development.
