Brown The P-51 Mustang "Miss Kentucky State" was a World War II aircraft that belonged to Tuskegee Airman Roscoe Brown, Jr. It was named "Miss Kentucky State" by his crew chief, who admired a homecoming queen at Kentucky State University. The plane also bore the name "Bunnie," which was the name of Roscoe Brown's daughter. The aircraft is now on display at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. The aircraft, a P-51D Mustang, was restored by Flyboys Aeroworks and dedicated at a ceremony in April 2016. The restoration included the "Red Tail" paint scheme, which is associated with the Tuskegee Airmen. The plane will be permanently displayed at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Roscoe Brown Jr. was a decorated member of the Tuskegee Airmen and a prominent educator after the war. He passed away on July 2, 2016, at the age of 94. S/N: 44-74908, CODE: 10, 'Bunny' Attached to: (The P-51D Mustang with serial number 44-74908, nicknamed "Bunny", was not associated with a specific fighter squadron during World War II. It was restored and is currently displayed as "Bunny 62" at the Palm Springs Air Museum. The restoration honors Lt. Col. Robert "Bob" Friend, one of the Tuskegee Airmen. The aircraft was previously owned by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as serial number 9273 before being restored to its current configuration. While the aircraft wasn't part of a particular WWII fighter squadron, it's important to note that many P-51Ds served with distinction in various fighter groups within the Eighth, Ninth, and Fifteenth Air Forces. These units included the 352nd, 357th, 359th, and 361st Fighter Groups, among others. The P-51D was a key component of the Allied air superiority in Europe, particularly in escorting bombers to targets deep inside enemy territory. III/JG53*Viper Posted August 2 Author Posted August 2 Some info. "JG 26" refers to the German Luftwaffe fighter wing Jagdgeschwader 26. The term "Herz As" (Ace of Hearts) is associated with Jagdgeschwader 77, not JG 26, according to a Military Wiki. JG 26 was known for its operations during the Battle of Britain and later in Western Europe, facing the RAF and later the USAAF. Jagdgeschwader 26 (JG 26): History: Formed in May 1939, JG 26 saw action in the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, and later against the USAAF in Western Europe. Notable Operations: They were involved in defending against the RAF's Circus offensive in 1941-42 and later against the combined bomber offensive. "Abbeville Boys": The II. Gruppe of JG 26, under the command of Joachim Müncheberg, was nicknamed the "Abbeville Boys" by the RAF due to their base in Abbeville. Jagdgeschwader 77 (JG 77): "Herz As": JG 77 was known as "Herz As" (Ace of Hearts). Service: JG 77 operated in various theaters, including Western Europe, the Eastern Front, Norway, and the Mediterranean. Varied Aircraft: They utilized different variants of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and II. Gruppe notably used the Macchi C.205 for a brief period. 1
