Hi Mike,

your first Spitfire is simply perfect. I have already tried it and I think it will be my favourite Spitfire MkI/MkV skin now. It's a real masterpiece!

Thank you very much.

Josef

Josef, wow! Thank you! That means a lot to me, specially coming from you (being the perfectionist you are) 😇 👍

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I, S/N: P3143, Code: NN-D

Assigned to: No.310 Squadron RAF

Flown by: Sgt. Bohumír Fürst

Hi Mike,

what a pleasant surprise! It's a beautiful Hurricane. I'm not afraid to say it's another your masterpiece.

Let me just add several, hopefully interesting, facts about this aircraft.

Hurricane P3143 was delivered to No. 310 Czechoslovak Squadron on July 24th, 1940 as a brand new machine.

It has become the most successful aircraft of No. 310 Squadron in the Battle of Britain. Four different pilots achieved six victories in this aircraft.

F/Lt Gordon L. Sinclair (a British commander of the A flight) destroyed 1 Do 17 on September 3rd, 1940.

Sgt Bohumír Fürst destroyed 1 Me 110 and 1 Me 109 on September 7th, 1940.

P/O Stanislav Fejfar destroyed 1 Me 110 on September 9th, 1940.

Sgt Bohumír Fürst destroyed 1 He 111 on September 15th, 1940.

Sgt Eduard Prchal destroyed 1 Ju 88 on September 18th, 1940.

P3143 was destroyed on October 16th, 1940. Sgt Jan Chalupa, a 21-year old pilot who joined No. 310 Squadron recently, was performing a training flight. He crashed near town Ely. A probable cause of this crash was an engine failure. Sgt Chalupa died.

Thank you very much for helping to re-create a piece of the Czechoslovak air history.

I think you deserve a rest now. If you're willing to do another Czechoslovak aircraft in the future though, I would appreciate it.

No, it's a thread for my skins whether it's P-51's or other AC's (pretty much like other similar threads on this forum). I know that Josef and I had (Josef in particular) an idea of starting a new thread... but I thought to my self, why do that when we already have a thread dedicated to WWII era AC's right here? I hope it's not a problem for you or anyone else for that matter.

Allt the best

Not a problem, I was just concerned if you had posted it in the Mustang thread and Hurricane lovers may miss it.

Sorry, the thread title literally says P51, hence my pointing it out in case it was a mistake.

I understand. I see your point and I wish I thought of that before I named it the way I did. Didn't expect the thread to grow the way it has. If I could I would but I can't... change the name that is. Unfortunately (or at least not that I know of).

Yes, that's the folder for the Hawker Hurricane.

The reason I named it Mk.I is because the original is a Mk.I (all Hurricanes goes into this folder).

Hello "Viper"
below another idea for a rare decoration for a Hurricane.

efkq.jpg

The left side of Jimmy Gardner’s 242 Squadron Hurricane was painted
with Nelson’s "England expects that every man will do his duty" signal from the Battle of Trafalger.
It is believed that the Hurricane which carried this art was P2884 LE-V.  Gardner
flew LE-V most often with 242 Squadron.

If I could find good/clear pics of this AC... I'll see what I can do. My wife just had a knee surgery (entire knee is now titanium and plastic) and are on sick leave for about 6 months, so I have to do pretty much everything here at home now (Yes, you're suppose to feel sorry for me now😂). I'm not able to do as much work as I'd like. Give me time and I'll get there eventually☺️

Take care

Mike

I'm sorry about your wife,

Take your time for the skins, it comes after your family.
I am looking for more photos and details for Jimmy Gardner's Hurricane.

Here is part of Jimmy Gardner's story:

A further Canadian connection to the Battle are the three Fleet Air Arm pilots attached to 242 (Canadian) Squadron.  Ostensibly, a Canadian squadron, 242 Squadron always had a complement of non-Canadian pilots attached to the unit.  After suffering heavy losses in France, Midshipman Peter Patterson, Sub Lieutenant Richard “Dickie” Cork, and Sub/Lt. Jimmy Gardner joined the Squadron in the summer of 1940.  While Patterson was killed in September 1940, both Dickie Cork and Jimmy Gardner made ace while flying with the Canadians of 242 Squadron.  Dickie Cork flew as the wingman for 242 Squadron’s famous CO Douglas Bader, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his “exemplary courage and coolness in successful action against enemy bombers.”  He later commanded 880 Squadron flying Sea Hurricanes, but was killed in a Corsair crash in 1944.  Jimmy Gardner survived the Battle and returned to fly with the Fleet Air Arm for the rest of the war.  To retain their nautical flavor during their time with the RAF, Cork and Garner wore naval uniforms and Gardner painted Nelson’s Trafalgar "England Expects" signal on the side of his Hurricane.

Having not found any other photos of his Hurricane, I attach an extract of the painting plan of the model.

rsfp.jpg

After research, I found the detail of the Royal Navy Signal Flags of 1940, it is this code with the flags used by Jimmy Gardner on his plane.

infz.jpg

This will be a bit of work, but with the Royal Navy Signal Flags of 1940, it is possible to create the flags for the right side.

1l79.jpg

I'll see what I can do, when I find the time... I know it's around here somewere😁

SORRY "Viper" but I have to tell you that there is unfortunately an error in the pennants on the right side:
You have painted the pennants with the NAVY code system of 1800.

yapg.jpg

n2lv.jpg

In fact, on Gardner's Hurricane, the NAVY pennant code used is that of the Royal Navy signal flags of 1940.

1l79.jpg

It is the one above.

I also found an inversion in the code on the left side.

So I accindentally switched the letters C and E on the left side and the right side "that every man will do his duty" is also wrong... okay I'll fix it ASAP.

Okay, flags fixed on Gardner's Hurricane as requested. No change to the file name.

Hello "Viper",
you will probably say that I am too much of a perfectionist,
I know that there is no photo of the right side of GARDNER's Hurricane and that nothing is 100 percent sure ?
But could you put the pennants in the direction of the wind when the plane flies ?
Like on the left side.
That would be logical... What do you think ?

Hey Pappy! A perfectionist yes... to much no! Hmm... I'll give it a try. If it turns out I'm not happy with it, I'll leave it as is.

Gardner's Hurricane updated with some of the flags on starboard side turned. I don't know... it looks okay I guess, but you decide.

No change to the file name.
