--[---MAILMAN---- Posted May 11, 2024 Posted May 11, 2024 Is there a setting (UI or config file) to disable/block the mini map from appearing at the start of any of the offline missions types. They have to be manually closed at the start of every mission. I only use the full screen map. Thanks

=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted May 12, 2024 Posted May 12, 2024 There might be something in the mod section if you're playing offline, but you can't change the mini-map to default as off in the vanilla game.

--[---MAILMAN---- Posted May 12, 2024 Author Posted May 12, 2024 Well something has changed. I had that setting as hidden. After an update the mini map started showing up. I had been flying mostly online and the server has the mini map turned off. I recently started flying the campaigns and some single missions again and the mini map always displays at the start of the mission. I have to use M to close it or hit ESC/flight menu/settings/mini map size and select hidden. So after your post I went in to the main menu/settings/flight interface/mini map size and found that the setting had been reset to compact, I hadn't changed it so it had to have happened during one of the updates. I changed it to hidden and clicked on accept. Everything was fine for all of the missions during my session. I shut down the game and then relaunched it, checked the mini map size setting again and the mini map size setting had changed to compact every time that I launched the game. I have changed the setting and restarted the game several times and the main menu/settings/flight interface/mini map size/hidden is not being saved/remembered.
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted May 12, 2024 Posted May 12, 2024 Thats by design, it will always reset back to compact every time you relaunch the game. It's not changing, in the thread above the official story is 1C thinks too many players can't handle toggling the mini-map back on, but who knows.

I just read it in its entirety. Thank you. I've played Combat Flight Sims for 30+ years and seen some doozies of explanations for stupid changess to how a sim operated. This change and even worse the explanation (not lukes fault he is just the messenger) takes the cake for stupidity. 😕😕 3
ST_Catchov Posted May 12, 2024 Posted May 12, 2024 On the runway, press M twice, press O, hide mission tab, press again. Takes two seconds and you're ready to go with mixture, radiator setting etc. Not a big deal .... unless a VR user I guess. But that's not my problem.
--[---MAILMAN---- Posted May 12, 2024 Author Posted May 12, 2024 No VR. It is a big deal when trying to fly a quick mission in a jug. When mission starts you got to come out of auto pilot, run up the rpm and throttle and turbo supercharger, setting engine outlet coolers, oil coolers and cowl flaps all while the bandit is closing and opening fire on you and you are trying to stay out of his guns. None of this is set up when the mission starts and then you got to close a mini map by mashing keys several times. Then again I see your flying kites so maybe it isn't complicated and a big deal.
czech693 Posted May 12, 2024 Posted May 12, 2024 There was discussion about this aways back. I think the outcome was too many were complaining about not having the map (or not being about to find out how to toggle it on), so they made it on by default and you have to learn the key to toggle it off.
[CPT]Crunch Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 It is a big deal when there's several other nagging places where you have to also jump through silly hoops like confirming your own exit. Annoyances always add up, everyone wants a new car when they figure out all the annoying bugs in the previous new one that slowly became junk

If you select an icon with 6 planes in it, you can adjust the distance between you and the enemy allowing plenty of time to do the stuff described above. If you just want one-on-one, set flight 2 on both sides to zero. I don't know about WWII, but the WW1 campaigns and missions I tried started on the runway allowing plenty of time to hit the M key twice. No big deal. Lastly, once the devs change something due to customer complaints, they rarely (never) change it back. Mind you, I don't remember these alleged complaints, but really I don't care either way. I don't lose sleep over it.
--[---MAILMAN---- Posted May 13, 2024 Author Posted May 13, 2024 Just more work arounds for a problem that really should not be considered a problem.

I don't have the minimap open on mission start, so it should be possible at least. I think I do have it set to "hidden", however my settings are persistent. Please check that none of the files (rather, the settings files but I can't remember what those are called) in IL2's home directory are set to "read only" in Windows - if they are, IL2 won't be able to save any changes to your settings.
Zooropa_Fly Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 It's a bit like my BMW - there's two or three things I have to deactivate before I drive anywhere. Having features is one thing, but I like to choose to use things myself, rather than the machine deciding for me. Old motors were much more likeable.
Lusekofte Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 Minimap do not show for me. Do you have easy setting on
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 At least this proves 1C has a sense of humor. For all the mean things said about 1C, they're clapping back with "yeah, well I think you can't handle hitting M for map". 1
