cardboard_killer Posted May 6, 2024 Posted May 6, 2024 [80 years ago today] "• The Douglas XB-42 Mixmaster has its maiden flight. Designed to be faster than the De Havilland Mosquito while carrying twice the bombload, it will set a transcontinental speed record on a non-stop flight from Long Beach California to Washington DC in 5 hours, 17 minutes. - The advent of jet aircraft will result in the B-42 never entering production. Douglas will attempt to convert it to a hybrid bomber with addition of underwing jet pods, and again with replacement of the twin fuselage mounted Allison engines with GE turbojets (XB-43 Jetmaster) but stability issues will result in the Army Air Force canceling contracts in favor of better bombers in the pipeline.
