tattywelshie Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Hi everyone, In a bit of a quandary re what to upgrade on my PC. I play BoX mostly VR on a Quest 2, and am striving for faster framerates, but don't know what upgrade I should get. I'm constrained by money (aren't we all?!), so can only really afford to upgrade one thing. I also play DCS and MSFS, so would be looking for something that covers off those games as well. Currently I'm on a 5600x, with a 3080, and 32 GB RAM. So, I was looking at either upgrading the 3080 to a 4080 Super, or upgrading the 5600, to a 5800X3D. Really not sure what to do, which option do you think will give me the biggest lift in terms of framerate?
DBCOOPER011 Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Depends on if your 3080 is being maxed out when gaming. You may be CPU bottlenecked. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/rtx-4090-53-games-ryzen-7-5800x-vs-ryzen-7-5800x3d/3.html
Aapje Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 I would not upgrade the video card now unless you find a great deal. New cards are very likely to show up by the end of the year.
Customizer171 Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 I am no expert of these things, but upgrading your CPU would be much cheaper. To my understanding the 5800x3d doesn't make a big difference in IL2 but give a nice performance boost in DCS. If you wait with the GPU, maybe the price on the 4xxx series cards will go down when the 5xxx gets on the market?
Aapje Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 The issue is that the 5600 is already quite decent. It would be a much easier choice if he had an older Ryzen processor. I would personally just wait out the end of the year and save for a bit longer.
chiliwili69 Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 I can only talk about IL-2. In this table you can see some people who upgraded from 5800X to 5800X3D an got +10fps in a Reverb G1. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k/ In any case, I think that a 3080 is plenty for a Quest2. I have a 3080 as well and for the Quest 3 is much more than enough.
w00dy Posted April 24, 2024 Posted April 24, 2024 I would recommend using fpsVR to monitor what resources your system is actually using. It tells you you everything you need to know like, how like GPU temp, GPU % used and vram used and the same for CPU. Also how much system ram is used and game FPS, you would instantly see what is bottle necking your system. I have am currently using a 7900x CPU and a 7900xtx GPU, when playing IL2. My CPU runs at 55% and my GPU runs at about 75% with about 12.8GB of vram used and about 19GB of ram used. I also run voice attack, fpsVR, Pico connect and play using Steamvr. Also run IL2 at 3072 res per eye on my Pico. fpsVR only cost about £4 on steam and well worth the money, not sure if you can buy it anywhere else. https://store.steampowered.com/app/908520/fpsVR/ Personally out of your CPU and GPU I would swap the GPU, as the 12GB of vram would limit you in VR. But that all depends on what graphics setting you want to use.

The 5800X3D gives a substantial boost in IL-2, particularly in VR.
