Charon Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Small drawbridges are very common on canals in the Rhineland area, but are not represented in game. If drawbridges were not used, the bridges would all need to be much taller in order for water traffic to move on the canals. Figure 1: Wilhelmina Canal bridge north of Helmond, in game vs in real life Figure 2: Londenbrug in Antwerp, in game vs in real life Period photos of various canal drawbridges: Il-2 already has a very nice Pegasus bridge model, but it's only used in one place (for Pegasus bridge), and it's about 90m long, and awkward length that means it will leave a slight gap in the road if it is used in most other places. Simple 50m, 70m and 100m road drawbridge similar to the ones pictured above would be able to act as drop-in replacements for bridge_road_100, bridge_hw50, and bridge_hw70, and would let mission authors add a lot of local flavor with one small change, as well as making the canals more distinct from the rivers. Because these drawbridges are often uniform in design, your artists could even just create one 50m drawbridge, and simply stretch the non-drawbridge portions of the span to make the 70m and 100m versions. 2 2
