Ghostrider147 Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 Hi all, When taking some screenshots in IL-2GB lately I noticed that 12.7mm bullets leave these grey ''patches'' on aircraft instead of leaving actual bullet holes. See the screenshot below. The Fw 190's wing shows a number of actual bullet holes but also many grey patches, after being shot at by a P-51B. Is this intended behavior or is it a bug where bullet holes are not properly rendering? I'm no ballistics expert 🙃 2
Rjel Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 I always assumed those represented paint flaking off as a result of the impact of the bullet hits nearby. If those gray spots all represented missing bullet strikes, that wing would've folded up and came off. 2
Mtnbiker1998 Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 put simply, the grey spots are holdovers from the days before we had proper Dynamic bullet holes on aircraft, they represented a section of the aircraft with a generic "lightly damaged" Visual effect. Now that we have proper impact effects, the two visual models have to coexist. It looks goofy but I suspect its the best we're gonna get from this game engine. 1
Avimimus Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 Well, a limitation of any game engine probably. Apparently the bottleneck is multiplayer - since each bullet hole location is unique, each one would have to be transmitted to all players within rendering distance... and that eats up too much bandwidth. I do wish the 'damaged' textures could be turned off entirely when flying single-player though! Especially for some of the WWI planes (where the decal bullet holes can be smaller than the generic bulletholes)
Field-Ops Posted April 20, 2024 Posted April 20, 2024 Pretty sure they are impacts but not penetrations, the bullets bounced off due to the near parallel impact from directly behind. The actual penetrations i see are very oval holes indicating the same.

A bullet from too far away has less energy and impact ..
IckyATLAS Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 You may have bullets sparking as they scratch on the metal and are reflected away, but here the ratio for grey patches to bullet holes seems abnormally high. With such a number of bullets fired there should be more holes. The skin is very thin and if we talk of 50' caliber even with a quite shallow angle there is enough energy to go through. Now if it is really a shot from afar you will even have a more perpendicular angle as as the distance increases you need to have a more parabolic shot and aim upwards or bullets will miss the plane going under it. In fact the nearer you are, the straighter will the bullet trajectory be until it hits the plane, but then energy will be also much higher. So to me this situation is not realistic with 50' caliber or 20mm cannon. Maybe with 7.5 mm bullets you may have more scratches, but again it still seems to me too much.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 (edited) I think 12 mm dynamic decals doesn't work , there are only 3 leves of predefined damage skins. For sure they do not show in multiplayer as dynamic decals on top of 3 damage skins levels. Edited June 3, 2024 by 1PL-Husar-1Esk
